CLOSED: Name the spider

sthlm, Sweden

Found this bugger when I was in Indonesia, namely the Gili Islands near Bali. The web was yellow and 1,5-2 meters in diameter. The spider itself 12-15cm.

Some kind of Nephilengys perhaps?

I was going to say Araneidae, but when I went searching, discovered that these have been re-classed to Nephilengys as you indicated. I think you are on the right track and hopefully someone will come along and offer further information.

The yellow silk of the web is an identifying characteristic.

We could use another image of it, if you'd like to share yours: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/322/

Closest so far is Nephila Antipodiana, or Batik Orb Weaver. However, the yellow pattern on the body differs slightly and "my" spider was "fuller". Also, Antipodiana has not been seen in Indonesia, at least not to my knowledge.

Here is another pic of Antipodiana:

I believe you've gotten closer than me. The fullness of the body could just be eggs maturing.

Yep, you're right, I think that could be it. The pattern differs a little from the second one but on the other hand mine was Indonesian and the other Thai.

So, I'll settle with the Nephila Antipodiana unless someone objects :).

Individuals will have slight variations, especially if they are in different areas.

A common spider in my area is the Argiope aurantia: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/showimage/11565/ There are quite a few variations in these images from different locations.
