Can anyone tell me what these ugly bugs are and HOW TO GET RID OF THEM?

They are aphids. I usually just mix up a bucket of soapy water (regular liquid dish soap) and use a sponge and garden hose and wash them away. That way you don't harm the good guys.

Thanks Melody! Does it get rid of them for good? And how do you use the sponge?

The soap will kill the bugs. You might get more, but I just wash them away too. I don't like to use chemicals unless it is an absolute last resort, so prefer the wash away method.

Just use lots of soapy water in a soft sponge and squeeze the soap over the aphids. Cover the bugs good, some will even fall off. I'll then rinse with the garden hose and help them along with my hand. I washed my field peas one year by dunking the ends in the bucket and swishing them around.

Aphids can't bite or sting you...they're harmless to humans, you just have to get over the 'ick' factor.
