Hi everyone. : ) I live in Connecticut and need help identifying these insects.
I had a wool sweater I've been meaning to wash. I kept it on top of my hamper, but it fell onto the floor and has been sitting there awhile. (The hamper is in the corner of the bedroom on the second floor which is carpeted. I have seen two centipedes in our home since we moved here 3 years ago, not sure if that is what these are.)
I went to hand wash the wool sweater today in a small bucket and these two little guys drowned and floated to the top. I would say that if you stretched them out they are about 1/3" long.
Thanks in advance. : )
CLOSED: Are these centipedes??
These are larvae of beetles in the family Dermestidae (carpet/skin/hide beetles and allies). You might want to check woolen and silk garments/fabrics, furs, etc. for signs of these insects or their damage.
Thank you! : ) I have seen three black beetles in the house in recent weeks. The children love to examine them for awhile, then we put them outside.
I have spent the past half hour checking our wool and silk clothing and have not seen any visible damage or sign of these insects. So hopefully there are not too many around. : )
