This fellow/lady was in my roses. He/she is very pretty.

This appears to be Noctua pronuba (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/mhakmv for an image. Known as the large yellow underwing, it is a European species that has become well-established in North America; see http://tinyurl.com/28dllkb for detailed information.
Very pretty but perhaps I should have killed it?
