You probably are correct, as these look more like eggs of a lady beetle than those of a squash bug (see http://tinyurl.com/26po77t). I make daily patrols of our squash/pumpkin patch, looking for both of these insects as well as for the squash vine borer.

I am ready this year with diatomaceous earth for when the vine borers show up. Do you have a good defense/offense for these destructive invaders?

Not really - I attempt to hand kill any that I find while patrolling the garden, and I look for resistant cultivars - usually those with solid stems such as butternut. Unfortunately, this leaves out pumpkins...
