I'm a warm weather girl, so I'll take this and just bear with it until the humidity drops a bit. I've got some insecticidal soap w/something else in it from Gardens Alive. Their stuff is fairly organic so I think I will try it on the roses and tomatoes to see what happens. We've got a lot of hummers this year so will spray late evening and post results. Lest we forget, only a few months ago we had snow! I'll take this over the snow--I'm just not able to enjoy cold weather for more than a month or so. Does look pretty though!

I miss 4 seasons, true seasons and milder summer temps. No matter how long I am here I still want a cool wet spring.

Plano, TX

yes to cool wet spring--yes to one or two good snowfalls-yes to beautiful fall with all its colors--
no to long cold winter and no to long hot summer
if i had my way that is!

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Winter for me can last as long as it takes me to get out all of my winter sweaters and wear each one once. Then it must start to warm up. Any number of snow falls will be OK as long as I can have a fire in the fireplace and a cool (not bitterly cold) and wet spring is fine. Fall can be nippy and colors in the trees are all good for me. I like a change of seasons which is why we chose NE TX and not FL.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

How many more days til winter? LOL

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Texas does have all 4 seasons, they just come all in the same day!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

The four seasons in Texas--football season, hunting season, basketball season, and baseball season.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

That is true but not all in the same day! HE HE

Arlington, TX

Ok winter can be bad but its what goes with a real winter...a mild summer, spring and fall with rain and lush plant growth. I do admit a short growing season is less than ideal though.

Cheryl, where did you move here from and how long have you been here?

Arlington, TX

Six years ago from MI and here is what I like about TX weather:
Lots of sunny days
working outside in December
a long growing season
semi tropical plants

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You forgot the not a lot of snow part! LOL

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Where does NASCAR season fit into all of that?

newtonsthirdlaw, I'll second all of that (most recent move was from Chicago area) but after living in FL for ten years (previous to the Chicago move) I would like to add that the leaves change color in the fall--at least here in the NE TX area. When I first moved to FL I though it was sooooo cool the have the lights on the palm trees and no snow to shovel and all. But after a couple of years my eyes just longed for a good fall show!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL Terri! That would be sometime in the spring/summer/fall, I would believe.

Cheryl, are you a yooper?

Arlington, TX

No not from the UP, near Ann Arbor actually, if that helps at all.
C

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I know some folks that live in the UP. I was just curious.

Arlington, TX

Now that's cold up there, even for me...

Now it do get quite hot here in SE Oklahoma but we have 4 seasons as well as football and we are not that far removed from Dallas so why don't Y'all just head up this way for our annaul Fall Folage (sic?) Festival held around the first weekend in November,Georgeous Fall color and lots of down home stuff for everyone to enjoy

Plano, TX

sounds like an invitation to me! as you said not that far from dallas! will you remind us in the fall --would love to see the gorgeous colors and enjoy the down home stuff!

Just a quick update on the trombone they are holding up quite and we have been to triple digits several days now and no rain..Eating quality is good to very good stays tender much longer than other squash varieties and all that see it is just astounded at the size of this monster squash..Starting to come under attack from a blister beetle but this particular specie seems to like the flowers of my sunflowers better than anything else ..As to the spraying question I use @Permethrin it is a spray develope from the flower of a lilly that whose name eludes me at the moment...Seniorites

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

Very cool! And thanks for the spray tip.

Talihina, OK

Just now remembered the plant that the Permethrin is based on it is the Painted Daisy maybe been out in the hot sun too much..

Talihina, OK

Just an update for the Trombone squash it is holding much better than any of my other squash and is just a wonder to behold ..Now I am learning that other people use it just like a butternut and that it keeps pretty well as a winter squash..An amzing plant no insect damage so far....

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

It did make a nice zucchini bread for me. =D I'm not sure why I didn't grow it this year. Sure will again next year!

I have heard that the Squash Vine Borer doesn't attach this type of plant.
Is it true?

drthor I haven't seen a lot of the borer damage but my trombone finally got too large to manage ,so cut them down after harvesting about 15 large mature ones as bakers also took a mature one and peeled the neck and sauted slices of it in olive oil and it is delicous fixed that way but have to be very careful or it will burned easy due to the high sugar in it ...

Talihina, OK

now if only I can find the pix of the mature ones will send ok did find it the piece of plywood it is laying on is 4'x4'

I want to try this squash but don't have that much room, can it be pruned at all and how much fruit did you get off the thing.
C

Talihina, OK

I only had 3 plants and got way more than two people could eat or give away took a lot to the senior center one day for lunch and then they threatened to lock me out ...The pile in the picture came from the largest of the 3

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks so much. I will definetly try it next year. Here in DFW I have tried everything against the Squash Vine Borer, now I will need to plant varieties that can survive this monster. I have read that Butternut squash also doesn't get damage from SVB.

Arlington, TX

But I want zuccini! I have given up on squash too but will try this monster and see if he can make it.
