This is a ten-lined June beetle (Polyphylla decemlineata; Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/262h6hz for the davesgarden page. They feed primarily on conifers, and their larvae (grubs) can be pests in tree nurseries as they feed on the roots of conifers, and can be quite damaging to seedlings.
