Umbrella magnolia (magnolia tripetala)

Toronto, ON(Zone 6b)

Hello,
I have a bag of seed that has been properly stored for the winter and should be planted now. I still have some 2 year old seedlings that I haven't found homes for so I don't want to start more. I don't really want to send 50 packs... so if there are a few people who could use dozens of seed please contact me.

zoneimpaired, do they grow that far north? have they bloomed for you? I'm in zone 8/8b. I bought one about 15 years ago. I had to have planted it in too much shade, because it's about 7' tall, and hasn't bloomed yet. the leaves are great on it though, big and drooping, hostajim

Yes they seem to be quite hardy here. I grow most of my seedlings for Nova Scotia and I have had some in the ground for 5 years now with no winter kill. I have had frost die-back with my magnolia macrophylla but I am still hoping that they will mature. I got the tripetala seed at the Royal Botanical Gardens about 40 minutes from Toronto. There is a beautiful big tree there that is very symmetrical and dense... very tropical looking and loaded with cones every year. I may drive out this week-end and I will take a picture to post. We are a zone 6b in toronto and 5b in Nova Scotia.

Robb, would love to see those pictures, Jim

Here are some pictures taken today. The flowering is over but from the size of the cones you can imagine how big the flowers are.
