What in the name of God is this beast of a Dragonfly? My wife called me down to the garage and thought there was a bat crawling around in the garage door light. When I went out this thing had it's abdomen hanging out of the slits in the light. When I finally got the car moved and opened up the light it was not doing so well. I currently have it in my son's 'Bug Collecting Container' hoping it might come around. I would hate to see such an awesome specimen die!
CLOSED: Huge Dragonfly
This appears to be a common green darner (Anax junius; Odonata:Aeshnidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/28j5nvw for an image and detailed information on this magnificent insect.
Thank you very much suunto for your help. I must sadly report that it did not survive it's ordeal. It would appear that the effects of being stuck in the garage light for so long last evening before I could rescue it were too much for it to handle. It was still breathing this morning, though it's legs were still as you see in the picture and it was not moving much. It certainly is magnificent, even if it scared the heck out of me last evening.
