Pookie has some babies

Conroe, TX

One of our Blue Cochins, named Pookie, (my kids named her) hatched out some babies. One baby is not a blue and was hatched by another hen that is still sitting on eggs and not taking care of the baby well enough so we slipped her in with Pookie. One blue baby (the smallest) was also hatched by another hen because it was so far behind the others and Pookie stopped sitting on her two remaining eggs. It hatched yesterday so we have now slipped it in with Pookie and so far she seems to not notice. She did notice the little black one but eventually accepted it as her own.
She now has a total of 5 babies, 4 Blues and one mixture.

OH MY goodness! How adorable!

It's easy to see how this site caused me to want chickens so badly.

Darling babies! Such a good mommy too. I hope to have a broody hen next year LOL

The last of the Blue Cochin eggs hatched under another hen late yesterday or early this morning. But, I don't know if I can slip the baby in with Pookie, it's a Splash and she will notice the difference. It took her a while to fully accept the black one we slipped her so I'm thinking a Splash will not go over as well either and be noticed.

By the way, if any of you remember Nugget that hatched last year, she is the one that has hatched the last two Cochin eggs and is sitting on several other eggs and has one more standard size baby. My little Nugget is a momma. (course, she isn't so little anymore)

Well Pookie took the Splash with no problem. Nugget had one Ameraucana mix that hatched but she is more interested in her eggs so I took the Americana mix baby and put itthe pen with Pookie. She looked at it and I said "now don't peck her, she needs a momma". She went on pecking food and took her in. She looked at me like "what the heck, one more baby won't hurt" I think she is getting used to us slipping babies in on her. The funny thing is the Ameraucana mix baby is as big or bigger than her babies that are several days old and it's only a day old.

oh that's to funny. Glad she took them all in

My guess is that chickens don't look at color. Smell is probably their determining factor, and your smell is all over all of them.

Chickens are amazing.

I think she has gotten used to us slipping one in daily. She will probably be looking for another one tomorrow. Maybe another one of the hens that are sitting on bunches of eggs will have one hatch just for her.
She is a good momma hen. I'll try to get pictures tomorrow with her and her 7 babies.

Can't wait to see the pics! How long do you let them sit on eggs until it's ok to start slipping them babies? Just wondering since I'm hoping for one to go broody next year and then order some babies for her.

We have been slipping chicks to this one because we have other broodies on eggs that have some hatch and don't take care of the babies because they are still interested only in their eggs.

I'm not sure how long to wait till you slip them babies if they are in sitting mood. I would think that once you slip them the babies and there are NO eggs that they will start taking care of babies.
