It's about 1.5 inches wide seen sipping damp soil.

CLOSED: Pretty Moth
Not a moth, but a skipper (Lepidoptera: Hesperiidae). it appears to belong to a group known collectively as duskywings; likely in the genus Erynnis - see http://tinyurl.com/29q7u3b for an example.
