After searching the web, I think I've identified this as a pine borer. Am I close?
CLOSED: Pine Borer?
You're close - this more likely is in the genus Chrysobothris (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/2bfpgmt for an image. The pine borer belongs to the genus Chalcophora - see http://tinyurl.com/28q9shu for an image.
Thank you Suunto. I see how it better matched the photo you sent. Does this critter have a common name?
The species Chrysobothris femorata is known as the flatheaded appletree borer - see http://tinyurl.com/2ahueon for more information. As in most groups of insects, only a small fraction of beetles in this family have 'approved' common names; hence the need for Latin binomials to specify which species one is talking about.
