I found this fuzzy bug in the front yard today. I have never seen anything like this before. Any ideas?
CLOSED: Fuzzy Bug
I am no bug expert but it kinda looks like these huge termites I have seen but they where not fuzzy
This is a female velvet ant (Hymenoptera: Mutillidae), a wingless wasp with a very potent sting; males are winged like most ‘normal’ wasps. This one appears to be a Dasymutilla sp. - see http://tinyurl.com/2dn6urj for an example. They are parasitic/predatory on the larvae of ground-nesting bees and wasps - see http://tinyurl.com/2bt464w for more information.
