I've always thought a picket fence would look nice around the front of the house & now that that I have chickens, it looks like I'll get one!
Trying to get ideas of what kind of picket fence will suit the house just right... I think white!
I would love to see your fences.
**Please show pics of your picket fences here**
Thank you.
Do you have a picket fence in your cottage garden?
Well I was hoping to see some picket fences.
Here's the front of the house. I planted some herbs and flowers that I grew from seed, most of them wintersown.
The dogs are a small problem compared to what the chickens are doing! They have scratched up many of the small plants! I am not complaining too much because I've wanted chickens for a long time & one of my nephews brought me 6 hens and a rooster for my birthday this year - he built a hen house and everything. ^_^
So anyway,I think a picket fence will look great...
I would also love to hear some ideas from you cottage gardeners, too.
I don't think the fence should take away from the house but it needs to be high enough to keep the chicks out.
This pic was taken before I began the garden. I'm thinking that I want to make a nice intimate cottage garden, close to the house where I will grow herbs and low growing flowers and such.
Allwild,
I thought long and hard before I had my fence built and eventually went with the old fashioned, built-from-the-ground-up, plain wooden picket fence. It was a year or two before I could afford to have it painted but it made all the difference in the world. Because the front of my lot was uneven and I wanted a little picket garden in front of the porch, I devised a way to do it with brick beds to level the field, so to speak. On the lower side, I just let the pickets follow the curve of the slope. On the driveway side, I had a brick wall built to separate my driveway from my neighbors (and to keep the neighbor's kids' big wheels from being left behind my car where I would likely run over them). Here's what I ended up with ... this is the lower side (beds prepared but not planted)
(Edited to correct a typo)

JudyinGA, that is pretty much what I was thinking as far as a simple, old style cottage fence!! LOL thank you for showing your pics. Our house is on a slope also, so me and hubby were discussing that we should have different size pickets, just like you show!! That looks perfect. I really do like that look. We were also thinking about double swing gates, like you show for the drive. And white, to match the trim of the house. Thank you again for sharing your photos. It helps much!
I agree on the imperfections too & love your snow drift pic!
Thanks, Allwild. You wouldn't believe what I started with. A little cookie-cutter, split level tract house just like its neighbors. Sure is different now! LOL I love that snow pic too. That was one of the first decent snows we'd had in years.
Please send pics as your fence project progresses. Would love to see them.
Here's my "before" ...
wow - it looks like a different house completely!
It sure does! Good for you JudyinGA, you should be proud of how beautiful you made your home look. It's a complete transformation.
As soon as we get started, I will send pics.
Thank you so much for the comments, Peonyrosegirl and Allwild. As I said, I had thought long and hard about all of it. I sketched out what I wanted and the contractors did the rest. It only took me about 15 years to make up my mind. Of course, I am very picky. One of them called me "Monk's Mother." LOL Now I have to do the gardens. Am starting from scratch. Will start a thread here when I get enough done to look at.
Am really eager to see how your fence project goes, Allwild. Look forward to the pics.
