This big guy is "trapped" inside a little plastic container on my front porch, unable to scale the wall to get out. He is about 2 inches long, has wings and what looks like a grey and black striped body underneath the wings and at least 2" long antennae. Does anyone know what kind of beetle it is and if he's a good or bad one? Thank you!
CLOSED: Who is this HUGE Beetle?!
This is a tile-horned prionus (Prionus imbricornis); Coleoptera: Cerambycidae. Their larvae bore in the roots of trees, and can be damaging in some situations - see http://tinyurl.com/24a59fb for more detailed information.
Wow, suunto, you're good. Thank you. I am guessing it must have come out today because I sprayed malathion around a tree stump and the bushes along my porch. It didn't take long for it to flip upside down and die in that plastic container after I noticed it today. Maybe it as a female as the info on the url you sent said females only live a week.. Thanks again. Mechelle
