Suunto, is this a Noctua pronuba? It was found in north central Maryland.
CLOSED: Noctua pronuba?
Looking at the head capsule, this more likely is a yellow-striped armyworm (Spodoptera ornithogalli; Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/28oavjq for an image. These caterpillars can be quite variable in body color pattern; the namesake yellow stripes often are quite subdued or nearly absent. See http://tinyurl.com/289mmts for an image of the head capsule of a Noctua pronuba caterpillar.
Thanks again Suunto.
