Can anyone help me identify this caterpillar I found in my butterfly garden in Seminole, FL? It was under some frog fruit plants.
Thanks, Mary
Greyish brown Florida caterpillar
This caterpillar is in the family Noctuidae (owlet moths), that contains several destructive pest species. There are tow species that closely resemble yours, the large yellow underwing, Noctua pronuba - see http://tinyurl.com/2aogo66 for an example, and the yellow-striped armyworm, Spodoptera ornithogalli - see http://tinyurl.com/2fsrblg for an example, The head of Noctua pronuba usually has a distinct pattern (see http://tinyurl.com/26z229h). which cannot be seen in your image. Both of these species are quite widespread and can show considerable variation in color pattern.
I believe it more closely resembles the Noctua pronuba - thanks for your help!
these guys are all over my garden, too! thanks for the post - i was unable to find an id anywhere else!
