Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I'll send you some seeds if you promise to NEVER EVER send me any of those! Will that work?

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

ROFL !! Sure!!! What kind of seeds? Every where I look in this yard I see maple seedlings. Good heavens!! Why do maple trees cost so much at the nurseries. Heck! I'd give them away. Just bring your buckets and stuff and start removing the.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

I have the same problem. Definitely understand!

I looked at your want list and the closest things I have are astrantia seeds, but I don't know if they're from the one you want or from ruby wedding or another red one whose name escapes me right now. I also have something called "grape poppy" from a trade, but don't know if it's Lauren's grape or not. Will those two guarantee no maple seedlings? If so, please dmail me your address.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

Pot em up and take them to your local nurseries....they might trade you for them !

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I've thought about that or potting them up and selling them at the flea market for a couple of dollars each. I do have 4 that I have to pack up and send to a DG member that wants them. I have 4 in pots that are about 2 feet tall.

DeLand/Deleon Spring, FL(Zone 8b)

The maples do that here too, all over my horse pastures. We have let a few grow for shade tree's for the horses. We just mow the rest down. We've already had to mow the horse pastures twice this spring, so there's gone already.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

How would you like to have Ash and Redbud all in your flower beds with 2 different kinds of Maples?? I am going nuts here !!!! BEV

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I've already gone nuts!! As a matter of fact that happened years ago!!! Now I'm headed towards crazy!! And being driven there.

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

At least I am not in the boat by myself. LOL I will come help pull yours if you will come help me pull. I have big bunches of Maple seeds pulled down by the worms all in my hostas. YIKES!!

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I'm pulling them up in my containers, all over the yard, walkways and found a couple stuck in the bumper of my car that had germinated. Determined little buggers!!!

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I'll send you some chinaberry & water oaks! LOL

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I was going to trade for SASE! I have enough trouble with these things. Don't need to add anymore buggers to the yard. ROFL

Baytown, TX(Zone 9b)

does anyone know by the picture which maple these are? I really love silver maples. Marti did you find a bigger sassafras for 1 of each of my hostas?

Anyone want some sweet gum trees????? I need to take a picture but I have a plastic squirrel the sun split the middle of its back. I have a sweet gum growing out of it...DUHHHH Then there are the balls you step on and almost fall or bare foot they are killers. Any takers ROTFLOL

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I have a sassafras that is 2 feet tall that I just have to dig and package it for shipment.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

been trying to get a chinaberry tree for ages.

yea what type of maple?

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

You do not want a chinaberry. They are on the invasive species list here and are fast growing and so weak that just a fair size storm will take out huges branches.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Have no idea which maple. There are two different kinds. One has leaves that are more cutleaf than the other. I'll try to post some pictures of the leaves.

Lake Charles, LA

Do you know what color those maples are in the fall?

Nilwood, IL(Zone 5b)

Soft maples aren't worth a darn but those look like the Red Maples that I also have. Do they have little red seeds in the Spring and all colors of leaves in the fall. If they are these they don't shed limbs at all. BEV

We basically live on a rock, so tree roots don't get to go down too far. We have a huge cottonwood tree that sends up baby cottonwoods all over the place from the shallow roots. I'm constantly cutting them down, and the more I cut, the more it sends up. Cutting seems to just encourage it to make even more. And if that wasn't bad enough, each summer, it gets it's cotton full of seeds that goes everywhere. I have to pull them all out. They come up in pots and beds and everywhere. I don't call it a cottonwood tree any more, I call it the Tree from He**.
We have other problem trees but this cottonwood is the absolute worse. I don't understand why anyone would deliberately plant this tree?

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Joy, the tree from he** is already taken. I think it's called acanthus, but I might be remembering wrong. Someone named it the tree from heaven, but I don't know what planet that person was from. I call it the tree from he**. It's the fastest growing weed tree I've ever seen, and smells bad when you cut it. It grows many many feet a year and roots deep very quickly, so it's hard to get out.

I have to say that my maples, which are mostly my neighbors, are the weediest maples I know of, with few redeeming qualities and millions of seeds. They're called sycamore maple. I couldn't tell from Marti's pic if hers were the same or not.

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

perenniallyme, Yes, I've heard of those too. I'll just call this one the tree from He** #2 then. LOL

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

ilj99, quite a unique item you have there, that squirrel tree.

Joy, really didn't mean to try to dismiss your problem tree. Thankfully I haven't experienced cottonwoods.

Kalama, WA(Zone 8b)

perenniallyme, I didn't feel dismissed at all. :-)

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh good. I can babble on occasionally (hung head).

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

I want a sassafrass tree...

and Was looking at a cottonwood tree on Ebay this morning LOL

So , I don't want to do that , right ????

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Ok, I'll look for another sassafrass tree for savagegarderner. I'll put your name on my hunt for list.

If you get a cottonwood tree GET A MALE TREE. No cotton blowing all over the place. But it will send up growth from the roots. Esp if you nick the roots when digging or mowing.

Right now I'm setting here listening to the thunder roll in. Wonder if I'll get any rain??

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

ROFL, you girls sound like my kind of gardeners, got lots of poison oak here if anyone want it :-)

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

Fabulous, flowersdelight! I don't think anyone else is offering it anywhere!

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I found three more sassafras trees. They are about 2 - 3 feet tall. I'm going to dig them up, pot them and see how they do. Than when I get my disability check I can mail them.

Perenniallyme, Thank you so much for the Astrantia and grape poppy seeds.

AND I PROMISE I will not send you any maple seedlings.

Jamaica Plain, MA(Zone 6a)

You're welcome, Marti. And thanks.

Middleton, TN(Zone 7a)

Thank you so much , Marti001!! You are so sweet , you did not have to do all that ...but I appreciate that you did
... Let me know how much it will cost to send and I can go ahead and send you the $

Sharon

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Sharon, I am going to go dig the sassafras trees this weekend and pot them here for a couple of weeks to make sure they are OK. Than I can place the rootball in a plastic bag for shipping. I'll let you know when I have them to ship.

AND Your welcome!!

Sundance, WY(Zone 3b)

Marti, can't wait to get the maple trees! I am so excited, hoping that they will do good here! Gosh, sure wish I lived closer to all of you! My DS and I would show up with a pickup and BIG trailer and dig trees to our hearts content! She (my sis) has miles of ditches that need trees for shelter for the livestock, and we would love to just fill the trailer full of all you problems!

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

skellog. I will ship on the 17 or 18 your maple trees. I'm going to ship 4 that are over 2 feet tall, plus as many as I can fit in the box of the smaller ones. They will go dormant for the winter and should come back in the spring. If they don't just let me know if the little ones down make it thru their first winter there and I will ship bigger ones in the spring. Like I said here they grow like weeds.
BTW Would you like to try a Sassafras tree?? I've found several that are 2-3 feet tall and am digging them up. 2 of DG members want 1 each that will leave me with a third one to find a home for. It also goes dormant in the winter.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Sassafras tree will grow in zones 4 thru 9.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Prowling around today and checking out some empty fields and found some interesting flowers. I got one and brought it home. I'll see how it does.

AND I found alot of sassafras trees. Should start a nursery for them

Well, we're getting thunder here and maybe some rain. Tomorrow we're going to Bardstown to see postmandug and his garden on the garden tour there. Plus I have to take him a wild hydrangea I found.
