Found this guy resting on my pitaya plant in Cozumel, MX around 11am. Never seen one of these before but found photos on this site -- none with a rusty blotch on the head as this one.
CLOSED: Is this a Giant Leopard Moth?
Certainly looks like one. Hypercompe scribonia
This is a relatively 'old' moth that has lost a lot of its scales. The orange spot simply is a bare patch of its exoskeleton exposed by scale loss. see http://tinyurl.com/366bpxl for a relatively recently emerged specimen.
