Sorry this isn't the greatest picture. It's about 2 cm across. Here it's resting on the underside of a burdock leaf. Anyone recognize it? Thanks!
CLOSED: Small black moth with white polkadots, in southern Ontario
This appears to be an eight-spotted forester (Alypia octomaculata; Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/25du3pq for an image.
Correction - Upon further thought, I now believe that this is a forester look-alike, namely a white-spotted sable moth (Anania funebris; Lepidoptera: Crambidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/394cpro and note the more orange cast to the scales at the sides of its thorax and lack of orange tufts on the front legs characteristic of the forester moth. My apologies for the mistake.
