Photographed in Phoenix, AZ. 5-21-2010
3/8 inch long
CLOSED: A Snout Beetle
This appears similar to the sisal weevil, Scyphophorus acupunctatus - see http://tinyurl.com/27xdcpd for an image. Another species in the same tribe (Rhynchophorini) known as the cactus or agave weevil (Cactophagus spinolae) also is quite similar, but has more prominent tibial spines - see http://tinyurl.com/24xokmw for an image.
This beetle is surrounded by Cacti and Agave.
I have this beetle image in Bugguide also, and they said that it was Scyphophorus acupunctatus also.
But they also inquired if there was any cacti or Yucca or Agave nearby.
