I need help with a flea problem and have a small child!!

I was hoping someone could tell me what the best method for killing fleas with a small child would be! I have a 7 and 1/2 month old crawler and am very paranoid of a lot of these chemicals. They don't seem to be attacking anyone but me at the moment. My plan was to spray a flea treatment into the carpet and let it sit for 5 hours then vaccum vaccum vaccum. I was going to repeat in 3 days. I was then going to rent a steam cleaner and try to clean the chemicals up. I'm very leary of using these chemicals and then putting my baby on the floor after I have vaccumed. Any and all advice would be appreciated. I would like to add I have NO PETS!! I wasn't sure what section to post this in so I hope someone can help!! Thanks
