Help! Tiny Gnat Like Bugs on My Daylilies!

Lufkin, TX(Zone 8b)

i have an infestation of tiny, flying, biting insects that swarm around my daylily beds. by the afternoon the daylily blooms are covered. it appears they may be feeding on the juices. they also bite and are very irritating. they are tiny, yellowish/brown. i hate to spray an insecticide because i have a lot of lady bugs. but, they have to go! any help would be appreciated. thanks

These appear to be thrips (order Thysanoptera); they can be difficult to control - see http://tinyurl.com/qg6ok for detailed recommendations. For some undetermined reason, some species will 'bite' humans; although annoying, the bites are harmless.

thank you. i had just about come to that conclusion myself. aaarg! i used Bayer 2 in 1 which has a systemic insecticide to control thrips, but the protection may have worn off already. thank you so much for your reply.
