Yepper you heard me...SAMBACS at Walmart!! Was I excited to find those tucked away in the back or what?!??
5 GAL Sambac at a Walmart near you
Is that a Jasmine Sambac? Which one? I have Maid of Orleans but the leaves look different. In fact they are so fadded from the cold and no sun you would never know it.
But she blooms like a good girl and is blooming now. They are so easy to propagate. Have you tried it?
I might have tried JB...the sambacs aren't fussy...they do well for me. The flower most certainly looks like a sambac to me but I don't claim to be an expert. I have my MOL in my bathroom...I'll take her down and compare leaves. The sambac leaves are so similar it's difficult to tell them apart at at times.
You have that right, they all look alike and it really is difficult to try and ID them if they did not come with a tag. I love to walk in and smell that aroma. I have given so many to my friends and sold so many of them to many people who have relatives in India. It is so exciting to find a plant you adore and just can not pass up. What a beauty that is you found. Here is my old girl. She is at least 5 now. About 5 ft. tall and still blooming. I had to plant her in a muck bucket because she is so big I could not find a pot large enough and now I know she is pot bound again and I will have a fit if I loose her for that reason. It is almost like having an elephant as a pet. Where do you put them when they grow up? She drinks like an elephant too. Good luck with your new love.
JB!!!! Your girl is gorgeous!!!! I've not had mine as long as you...so she still fits in a reg pot....I love them so...dont' you?
I have had more enjoyment from their aroma than any other plant except my Aimee and my other gardenias. A wonderful way to begin a day, just makes you feel good all over.
Help me here. When I was a little girl, 80 yesrs ago, we had at our farm an old big bush that would get burgandy color blooms, not flowers exactly, but the were very firm and thin petals and rather fuzzy and they were like a sunburst. My grandmother would pickone and tie it in the corner of her hanky everyday so she would have the wonderful frangrance they gave when warm. I so want to get my kids one of those bushes and all she ever called it was a Shrub. That is no help at all. Do you know where I could possibly look and see if there is anything like that in existance anymore?
JB, just off the top of my head, could she have had a "sweet shrub"? They smell good, but I don't remember what the blooms look like.
JB Thats a good decription why don't you post it in the snt ID forum? Might be sweet shrub as Doe mentioned but give her a post over there - they're really good!!
Congrats Chantell, I was so excited last year when I found them at Lowes here, I ended up getting 4. I put them in the ground and they bloom but certainly not at all to the amount like JB's those are amazing.
JB would you be so kind to let us know the secret to your success of so many blooms. Is it a special fertilizer you use on it? I tried my older one in a pot for 2 years but it never put that many blooms out. It does bloom but probably just 3-5 open at one time. That's why I bought the other ones at Lowes because they were full of blooms when I got them, I put them in the ground and this year, same thing. Just scattered blooms. I think it may be because I am not religious about fertilizing them on a regular basis.
Don't forget to post back here what your mystery "shrub" is when you find out what it is, I'd really love to know. I love anything worthy of sniff! I really do have to get myself one of those sweet shrubs, I've heard good reviews about their smell.
Could do that, They are very helpful. I have used them before, but I had pictures to help them. This time I am not sure they will understand. I will give it a try. Thanks.
I think it is because she is not potbound, and I water her everyday alot, plus, I feed her when I think about it with MG liquid that you hook to the hose. She looses her green color in the Spring and then I shoot her some iron. I think the sun bothers her too. I keep the shade on the GH from now on and she is in the corner with the doors open during the day. She like light but not direct sun. Same with her babies. I keep them pretty much in the shade. They too turned yellow for me this year and I am at a loss to know what happened except the soil needed some fertilizer. They were sprayed two days ago and I can see the difference already coming out. The little veins in the leaves are turning green now.
You know, I am the world's worst when it comes to fertilizing plants. I forget, or I overdo it.
I usually do it when they look so sad it is pathetic. But, I seem to have good luck with what I do, so I just do not change. Sorry I can not be more helpful. It isn't that I do not want to share, I just do not know what I do special. JB
!! Samantha !! How are you!! So good to see everyone popping in to say hello...it's the season for us isn't it? ^_^
Hi Chantell....yes I haven't been on here for such a long time, so busy with everything but all is good. All the pretties are popping out right now, I'll be sure to post some pics soon.
bump
More in bloom now...scent is not as heavy as the MOO and the blooms are slightly smaller...but definitely sambac in shape...
Why don't we try and identify which one it is. Take a picture and we will check the Top Tropoical Sambac info. They have pictures of all of them. Really neat. they even have a booklet called Jasminun Sambac ABsolute Flower. Truly has alot of good into in it. They have a library called Tropical Gardener Library too. Worth looking into for research stuff.
OH JB I love that site...wasn't too pleased with my order...but I love it for info. I will take pics either tomorrow morning or after work and try to post...also of the leaves....
I am not to fond of their plants either. They all have that dark crap on them when you gdt them and none of them every did too well for me. But, as you say, the info is tremendous.
That is a real sweet looking little darlin. What kind of fragrance does it have? It looks so much like a jasmine. How big is the bloom? Love it.
JB it is a jasmine...I believe one of the Sambacs...fragrance is nice but not as heavy as Maid of Orleans
OOOPS SENIOR MOMENT! I completely forgot you had one to identify when I looked at this one. LOL. Sorry.
I enlarged the picture If it is not a Maid of Orleans, which you seem to think it is not. Then it could be an " Arabian Knight" . That is very similiar to the Maid of Orleans, except the Knight flowers are double. That is what it looks like to me. Can you find picture of the Knight......try the Top Tropical site. They may have it there, and see if you can compare them. Top Tropical puts out a little booklet with pictures of the Jasminum Sambac in it. it is called" Jasminum Sambac Absolute Flower." I do not know it fhey still sell it or not, but it is very useful in trying to identity these Sambacs.
Hope this helps. Sorry about forgetting you said you were going to put up a picture. I was just not thinking. JB
O.K. Let's have a minute silence. My Jasminum S. 'Belle of India' left us today. I tried to save it, but it got cold in the Spring when I put them outside and it decided to stay dead.
I hate when I do stupid things like that, but, maybe there was a reason other than my stupidity. I wonder if I have two of those. I should look and see. Hmmmmm.
Oh JB IF you only knew my losses last fall directly due to my procrastination....I understand believe me
I am having a mental melt down the last few days. My heart is breaking for all the birds, fish, critters of all kind loosing their eggs and babies and their own lives due to the oil spills. I am a real wild bird and animal lover. Especially those near the ocean, and I am sick to my stomach when I look at the pictures on TV. Having bred birds for so long I can almost hear the noise they are making when they find they cannot move due to the oil on their feathers. Forgive me, this is not fragrant gardening. Sorry.
JB - I've told you before "we" are not like "that" here...you vent about whatever you need to...I wish I had you close to give you a hug. I here you...the only way I keep my sanity over this is to severely limit the amt of it I view or listen to. Not comparing it to 9-11 but I guess I am to a degree. We had to tell patients to turn OFF the TV and radios...we can only handle so much...
JB, it helps the rest of us who are also having difficulty coping with that disaster to hear someone else acknowledge it and show they care. So, thank you for that and vent all you want. Chantell's right, too, though - all the more reason to now and then turn our attention away for perspective.
Hope you don't mind remarks verging on the foot-in-chops from a lurker.
Karen
Blue , millions of hearts are breaking with you . Wildlife , livelehood, just all of Gods shoreline is ruined for years to come for mans mistakes . I understand , We own property on the costal bend in Texas . A lot of the oil would stop on the barrier , ( Padre Island , Mustang Island , but the men would be dead in the water for the shrimp , oysters , fish and other things that affect the livelyhood . My son is a fishing guide on weekends , but others do only that for the family income .
Chantell , My moos are blooming and I got a star jasmine . Wonderful
JB and Digger, I don't know what to say - don't have words - but thank you for your posts.
Our Jasminium grandiflorum's fragrant blooms are coming to an end for this season, which we enjoyed very much in spite of a neighbor's attempts to kill it. We had it trained over an arbor in a break in a yew hedge on the property boundary between us - guess he prefers a "scorched earth" type of gardening with endless unbroken swards of grass and tidy plants on the perimeter. I think it needs the winter protection of the hedge for winter survival this far north and hope to have a better picture this time next year.
Hello all...sorry I read this while at work and forgot to respond. I know everyone's hearts are breaking...you're not in the minority...believe me.
Sally - I hope your son will do ok job-wise despite this horrible tragedy. On a positive note (you have to) I'm beginning to think that maybe this big jasmine is a MOO after all...she is covered in blooms right now and the scent was quite strong on one of the blooms I gave the sniffer test to - tonight. I'll snap a pic of her tomorrow. She will definitely come reside in my bathroom over the winter months...my favorites go in there to enjoy the humidity provided - thank goodness for a bathroom with a window!
Karen - I'm with you...the postage stamp perfect manicured look is SO not my taste. I've obliterated all the grass from my yard...I just keep planting more plants...LOL I LOVE it...love it love it. Recently discovered that some coneflowers, daylilies, and Iris' were fragrant! Who knew? Not me!!!
Ooooh . Tea jasmine. Delicious fragrance, and throw a handful of blossoms in a cup of hot water in the AM. :P Mine is covered with buds after a rough winter in the basement with spider mites. I hit it hard this spring with fertilizer and acidifier. It leafed out like crazy and is getting ready to pop for me. :)
-Joe
Hmmmm....maybe they should be thrown in the bath then???? I have to say....I REALLY hate spider mites and mealies...even more so then fungus gnats. At least the gnats leave my plants along and just drive me nuts. Someone at our last plant swap brought a great homemade bug killer...that was alcohol/neem/Murphy's soap...yeah buddy I love the stuff and yes, it works. Best to catch the boogies when they first start but works well even if you don't...long as you're consistent when you notice the nasties.
Oh , thank you chantell . Well now we know, it won't affect the Texas coast as far south as he is . I'm so sorry for all my D G and other friends that are affected . Maybe the worst is over . I pray it is .
Tea jasmine ? does it smell good and how hardy is it ?
Oh Kevin...I do believe you're right...and seeing your pics makes me miss your yard...and a magical little Eden you have!!!
Sally - you and me both...I simply can't imagine... Kevin might be able to tell you better how hardy Maid of Orleans is...I know it's not to my zone (7A) - which is why my littler one resides in my bathroom during the winter. I also had to move that big one to my deck. South facing front of house is simply too much sun for her. That's one thing I've noticed with Moo's - they seem less tolerate of full sun... And yes....they most definitely have a wonderful scent...one of my favorites...
Is tea jasmine and moos the same ? I have the moos you sent me and found two more at Box store in Tex . They travel with me back and forth but will plant them out this winter i protected zone 9 b or10 a
Chantell, I have a neighbor who has a garden center down the road and she was telling me when she went to school they did a study on mealie bug and they can be around for seven years. You may never see them, but they are there. If you think they are gone, they are not.
I just had to put about 50 seedlings outside in the heat and sun because I noticed when they were in the greenhouse they were getting mealiebug and i did not want it to spread to the gardenias and jasmine. I have not been able to plant these seedlings in the field because it has been too hot and they will just burn up. They are the ornamental egg plant and the pumpkin on a stick plants. I started them from seed and they were beautiful plants but over night puff, there they were again. I guess once we have them we are stuck with them for seven years. Great thought! Grumble Grumble! JB
Ahhh thanks for THAT one, JB....LOL...as I found some on my shoot star for the first time ever tonight...ugh. Sure you wanted some cuttings off of her??? I'm telling you she has NEVER had them. The one that has them is in the BACK yard...this one is in the front...very sad I tell you
Where are they coming from? They are more than ever. I just keep washing plants and spraying them and the begonias are going to the greenhouse today and I am so afraid they will be infected with the doors open, etc. but, I need the space in the house to bring in some larger stock plants for winter cuttings. Oh God, why did you make those fuZzy little bugs?
