I am going to be moving in a few months and have 3 large specimens I am sad to leave behind :( We cant seem to get the varieties of these at my nursery anymore.
1. A Mauve Mist bottlebrush, Callistemon. I have found "some" info. on rooting these, some places say its hard and some say its easy. Would now be the ideal time to do it and how long of pieces would you recommend?
2. Magnolia "Anne". I love this small pink Magnolia, it often re-blooms in the summer! I have a feeling this will be a hard one to root cuttings of, I am wondering if I should air layer and if so, how long would that take? We plant to rent this house out in about 6 months so I would have access to get back in and get the plant.
3. Michelia x Jack Fogg. This is a huge bush, taller than the house. I NEVER see this hybrid offered anywhere. Any tips? Can I do it?
4. Rhamnus unsure of name but variegated Buckthorn. I can still buy this one but only in 5 gallon cans and I would like several to spread around future property.
I plant to take cuttings of my species roses, buddleias and other goodies and even just whack back and dig up the other hybrid roses.
Thanks in advance...I hope my post isnt so long everyone clicks away :(
Michelia, Magnolia and Callistemon
Hopefully you'll have good luck with your cuttings, but if not you might try Sonoma Horticultural Nursery for the Michelia--unless things have changed in the last year or two they've got a nice selection of them and probably have the one you're looking for (seems to me I got one of those from them and then managed to kill it) They may have the Magnolia too. And Berkeley Horticultural Nursery frequently carries Callistemon 'Violaceus'/'Jeffersii' which I think would have similar color flowers to your Mauve Mist. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/74821/
Thanks for the information Ecrane! I have never been over to Sonoma Hort. even though I live fairly close, need to go one of these days. I "think" Suncrest Nurseries might be able to get me one of the Callistemons, and I have seen the Magnolia go through occasionally...its the Michelia I have never seen offered anywhere since. Not even online! I am going to try the cuttings, the worse I can do is fail huh? :)
Sonoma Hort does have your Michelia...not sure if it's necessarily in stock but they have it in their complete list of companion plants so hopefully they could find one for you if you need it. http://www.sonomahort.com/companion.htm
That. Is. So. Cool!! (as my kids would say..lol) How is it I have never been over there? The pics of the gardens make it look almost as cool as the late, great Western Hills (sniff, sniff). Im going to have to cruise on over there very soon, thanks ecrane!
