I was at a friend's yesterday who has darling Araucanas from SkyBlueEggs....

How do the combs look? Nice and peasy?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

They do look rumpless so there is hope yet!

(Zone 6b)

Gorgeous.

Gridley, IL

They are beautiful! its kinda hard to tell from the pictures but are any of them tufted?

Richmond, TX

What cuties! Do they normally have tufts at this age? My Ameraucauna chicks didn't grow tufts for about a week.

Gridley, IL

My araucana chicks that have tufts so far are hatched with them.Ill take pics of the 3 that hatched today.

Gridley, IL

here is the one with tufts its kinda hard to see but they are there already.we also had a black one hatch a few weeks ago and it also had tufts at hatching.

none have any tufts that I can see. They are 7 days old today.

Cat the adult ones I hatched last year really don't have much comb or wattles compared to my BCM or Wyandottes

hmmmmmmmmm after looking at those videos I am wondering if I got the culls and why she couldn't give me what I ordered. She doesn't sell to many adult birds so figured as she hatched she kept what she wanted and sold the other chicks as you can't keep them all.

Lodi, United States

Hi DonnaB...I think not having an obvious comb is a good thing right now. One problem that can crop up when they breed for new colours or traits is a recessive single comb.

I doubt that you got culls....you probably just got all she had because you were the most vocal.

My friends has two back orders with her right now and has heard the same story that she had a breeding crash over the winter. She hasn't offered him a refund either although he was a good customer with whom she was very friendly last year.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

she was friendly with me too until I asked for the refund. I caught her in to many lies via the e-mails starting with the hatching eggs I bought and continuing with these live chicks. She is a dishonest person just out to make a buck. She keeps the best for herself to show so she can post her wins and then sell the adults for mega bucks on eggbid

Richmond, TX

Well to be fair, if I were breeding and showing, I would definitely keep the best for myself.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

I love the chipmunk chicks! They don't keep those markings when they feather out, do they?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

no they don't. I sure wish they did. I think they are the cutest

but that is so wrong PP if you are telling the customer he/she is getting the best stock in the US and charging prices for the best stock and then sending people crap/cull birds. From what I read and watched on the video from the other ladies site; if it is not born with tufts you are not going to get any tufts from chicks from those birds unless they just happen to have internal ones. How would you know?? I have nice looking clean faced Araucana I hatch from eggs I pd 16 dollars for and got 50% hatch. SkyBlueEgg hatch was zero. She sent eggs in Dec with no heat. They arrived ice cold, said would send more and never did so I just ordered live chicks looking for better that what I had.
My opinion of SkyBlueEgg is they are thieves and liars. I guess when they get enough irate customers like me she will be out of business. Most people don't know much about true Araucanas because there is little info out there to be found

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

3 and 7 appear to have large heads. Is that normal for the breed?

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

Cajun I really don't know a lot about Araucana but based of the ones I hatched last year and these I just got #3 doesn't look right at all. Its stance almost looks like a gamebird and looks like to much rearend/spine is missing

Baby is going down hill again. It goes to mash with the others then just stands there and doesn't eat. Looks like its wings are drooping. I am hand feeding it again and it is fighting me this time. just doesn't want it. maybe I should just let it go. They are all getting pastybutt despite me cleaning the brooder 3 x's a day and feeding them medicated chick starter and vitamin water

There is just so much of nothing pleasant about this purchase and dealing with that woman

Wolfie does Araucanasonline sell bantam too or just the large fowl

Gridley, IL

I think she only has large but check out her site i will look again also.I bet she knows of someone who has them tho if shes showing.so far i only have 3 that hatched but they were due today so ill give them another day or so under the broodys.I have a 4th one that we hatched out of some e bay eggs but that was the only one that hatched in the incubator. Its alot older also.I will take some pics for ya of them.I did read that you do want some untufted birds in the flock tho or eles you get too many leathal tuftrd gene and lower hatches.

Lodi, United States

My friend did get some tufted chicks from SBE.

Tufting is tough, because, as S_W says it is associated with embryo mortality. Same with short legs in Japanese Bantams.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

untufted is all I have Wolfie, 4 from last year and the 8 babies now. SBE ad said you would get some tufted chicks, clean faced, rumpless, and partial tailed chicks in the birds you bought from her

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

close ups of the #3 chick. It just looks so wrong to me. the butt, down, and leg stance

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

It's hard not to fight till the end but sometimes it is better to let them go. I have a roo chick with a crippled leg. The others were bigger than him and broke it. Now it is turned out and nearly upside down. he has to be in a cage by himself. He hops around happily on his one good leg, but what future does he have? Can't be intergrated and can't be turned loose. Don't know what I will do with him. Named him Chester after the Gun Smoke character with the limp.

if he is fine maybe one day you can build him a tractor so he can graze and have lady visitors over

I will keep hand feeding it until it gets better or dies, it just breaks my heart so bad to try and save something and it end up dieing anyway

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Donna, if I can suggest putting a clump of grass with the roots and dirt in there, that will cure the pasty butt.. it works 100% of the time! I think it's the dirt, but I've never just put dirt in alone.. and since I started doing it, I never get any with pasty butt anymore, so I don't know for sure. I just know it works.
Often times one that was totally stressed in shipping might pick up temporarily only to fade later.

I'm sorry this has been such a nightmare.. I hope they are okay.

Gridley, IL

I agree with ZZ try the grass clump.Ever since i read that on here i have tryed it and it does seem to work! Mabie it has something to do with kickstarting the gizzard i dont know but if nothing else they sure enjoy it. Giggle Im going thru a hatchery night mare also.I am waiting on 4 day old goslings sent yesterday with no heat pac(I just found out) and the tracking number shows nothing since they were droped off.Grrrrrrrrr I feel your pain. This order was placed and paid for back in feb with an april ship date Lol they have had to change several of the rare breeds i originally ordered several times and i still dont have any of the 35 chicks, ducklings, and goslings i ordered!

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

I will sure give it a try. Do I need to put some grit too??
