I am replacing large azaleas around my patio area--want suggestions of fragrant shrubs--evergreen --if possible that will grow in zone 6 with 3-4 hours of sun a day. Shrub should max out at 3-4 feet high and wide.
What do you think will work here?
fragrant shrub for part sun area zone 6
Rosa 'Frau Dagmar Hastrup'
Common Name: Hedgehog rose, Ramanas rose, Japanese rose, Sea tomato
Care: Grow in fertile, moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Provide good air circulation and remove fallen leaves to help prevent disease. In late winter or early spring, prune lightly or back by up to 1/3, reducing side shoots by 1/2 to 1/3. To renovate, prune one in four or five shoots from the base.
There are others with different scents that can be grown in part sun.
Also
Daphne × transatlantica 'Summer Ice'
Care: Site in a permanent location in sun or part shade and organically rich, well-drained soil that does not dry out. Mulch to keep roots cool.
The blossoms release an intoxicating fragrance.
PS
Got info for both from fine gardening site
I can't think of a practical evergreen which would be hardy for you and be fragrant in the summer.
Daphne could be wonderful, but they're pretty finicky. Kalmia also a possibility. Or pieris.
Deciduous options include a carlesii viburnum (the 'compacta' cultivar) or Miss Kim lilac.
Both are wonderfully fragrant, but probably bloom too early in the season to be comfortable sitting around on the patio. Both are fairly compact, but will be bigger than 4ft eventually.
I have a deutzia which blooms well with part-sun conditions, but not very fragrant.
Would hydrangeas or ligularias work for you?
They're not really shrubs, but fairly large, summer blooming, and would do well in part sun.
Or of course, replacing the azaleas.
Just some thoughts...
I have read that Daphne are finicky -- but I have two - one is about 8 years older than the other and I have had no issues at all. As long as the site is well drained - the shrubs do wonderfully well and get nice and wide but not too tall. And the fragrance is knock your socks off wonderful for several weeks. The rest of the time it is quite beautiful.
The problem is (have not experienced) that we fall in love with it and then one day it up and dies --- can be 12 years later but still would be a heartbreak for me. It is so 'looked forward to' each year. (That is why I planted number two!!)
I planted Miss Kim two years ago - because we can't grow the old fashioned lilacs here. It was supposed to stay small and I guess for lilacs it is -- but my 2.5 3 foot shrub is easily 5 feet now and doubled the width. No bloom this year for some reason. But they do smell wonderful when in bloom for a few weeks. I wish I could grow the old fashioned.
Has anyone tried the lilac var 'Josee'? It's supposed to be reblooming and not get super huge. I'm considering putting in a few around our deck.
No - I have lilac envy for you all cold climate dwellers
wat do you think of using clethra in this area as foundation planting in this area---fragrant.---what do think of the various
types of this shrub? what experience do you have with this shrub in the part sun area in zone 6?
Clethra might work out well. There are some newer shorter varieties.
