Reading , and laughing, in public?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I always have to have reading material for any kind of wait , and like to read too when eating by myself. Do you ever laugh out loud in that situation? I wonder what people think of me. What book has made you LOL in public?
I just did it with Laurie Notaro's The idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death I've read a couple others of hers too
. I recall doing it many years ago with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

(Zone 7a)

I do it all the time! I was reading a sci-fi book while getting my truck emission/safety tested this month and was laughing out loud. I get some strange looks but I don't care. If it's funny, it's funny. I can't NOT laugh.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Thank you! I was about to think I was the only one...Do you remember which book had you laughing? I was told Philip K Dick was funny but the one I got of his didn't catch my interest.
I really recommend Notaro's Idiot girl books. My library doesn't have them on the shelf, they are not recent enough or popular enough. Don't we all feel like idiot girls at times? She writes as an adult, not as a 'girl', married, pets, working as a writer, living in Phoenix with crazy neighbors, mom, granny--lots of stuff to potentially identify with.

It's called ONE by Conrad Williams. I had to put it down and haven't finished it yet. Not really funny or sci-fi (more like horror) but there is some funny dialogue.

I love it when some else laughs like that. It makes ME smile which in turn I hope I pass on!!! We need MORE of it....

(Zone 7a)

I agree we need more public laughter. If more people laughed in public and shared what they laughed at, instead of "minding their own business", this world would be MUCH happier.

HO _ HO _ HO HEE - HEE-Hee Ha,ha, HA, Any way I can get out the chuckles!!!

Yorkshire,

Yes, sallyg, I was reading McCarthy's Bar by Pete McCarthy whilst waiting for a flight to Belfast. I kept laughing and hoping nobody was watching. Even after I'd put the book away I kept thinking about it and giggling to myself. LOL

I'm so relieved that I'm not the only one who enjoys a good old chuckle (even when I'm on my own, hahaha).

Kwanjin, I agree!! Laughter is the very best tonic.

Taking notes here, and will work on spreading the joy!

I am glad I am not alone. Books by Janet Evanovich make me laugh out loud.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I have enjoyed a lot of hers. I forget where I left off in the numbered series. Can't you see Neicy Nash playing her wacky 'assistant'?

NE, SD(Zone 4b)

She would be perfect for the Lula character. I think Betty White should be Grandma Mazur!

I am on #9 and it only gets better. I have laughed out loud so many times.

Denton, TX(Zone 7a)

How about Monique for Lulu? I agree with Betty White as Grandma or Cloris Lechmann would be good too.

Hmm, I haven't read any adult comedy books for a while. Not since the Dilbert comics were peaking, maybe. But my son has collected "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series and he was obviously enjoying them and asked me to read one. I started one and in a few lines, was snickering. Those books were written about HIM--he is the wimpy kid!! Everything about school and boy stuff, ideaology, etc. Cool. And yes, I've read some Judy Blum books he had also. But of course, I don't take "The Diary of a Wimpy Kid" on Metro with me.

(Zone 7a)

I laughed through the whole series and did take them out in public with me. Once in a rstaurant. Yeah, got some funny looks.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

I'll have to try one! They are very popular. (DWK) Jeff Kinney
I was LOL at one particular thing in the Dilbert book, how women don't like to DATE engineers but like to Marry them.

My fear is someone will hear me and think I am CRYING in public. Horrors.

(Zone 7a)

Pick one up at the bookstore and read it in the aisle. You'll get all SORTS of attention!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Ha ha, I'll have a better chance of reading it that way. The library copies are chronically checked out.
Sadly we are down to only two bookstores for the county, a Books a million and a Borders. All our smaller bookstores (Walden in the malls) are dead and gone. And this is a densely populated area with some affluence!
Series of Unfortunate events was excellent though not much LOL, just very clever.

(Zone 7a)

Walmart? That's where I got mine.

NE, SD(Zone 4b)

Since April I read all 15 Janet Evanovich books and waiting for 16 to arrive. I thought 15 was hilarious. I am going to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid in the interim. Would the DWK book be appropriate for age 10 and up? Thanks.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Duh, you're right -k- I have bought last couple books at Target.

(Zone 7a)

No worries, Sally. I do it ALL the time. LOl

Yes, Rockette, no swearing, no sex, nothing but good fun. Sibling rivalry at it's best.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7b)

Rockette--"Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is appropriate for a 10-yr old. My son is now 10, going on 11 this fall. Most of the stuff in there follows the wimpy kid's progression into middle school. It is perfect for that age group.

Sallyg--I think I enjoyed Dilbert most on the office politics and "reinventing government" jokes.

I see people reading on Metro everyday. But I haven't caught anyone laughing. If I did, I would tap them on the shoulder and ask if I could see what their title was. They seem to be reading heavy stuff, or Harry Potter (by J. K. Rowling). We have all of Harry Potter's sequels, of course. In fact, we have all of the DVD's, too, and our son is constantly playing them whenever he gets a chance.

I'm going to look for a humor book for this summer and see what's out there.
