We found this in our yard today in an area that is near some trees and where I had last night mowed down some tall weeds. We live in Connecticut. The spider was about an inch and a half long and I don't believe it is a wolf because it's entire body was solid tan with no leg stripes and it had one wide solid black/dark brown stripe down its back. Also from the picture's I've seen wolf spiders look hairy and have a more segmented body where this spider appeared to have no hair and its "head/butt" where wide the whole way down. I'm just worried that it might be dangerous for us or the dogs to be around, or the neighbors kids in the back yard! Anybody know?
What kind of spider??
Not an ID, but as to safety, see the sticky at the top of this forum.
This is a fishing/nursery web spider (family Pisauridae); likely Pisaurina mira - see http://tinyurl.com/26rm698 for an image. Large specimens are capable of inflicting a painful bite if mishandled, but they are not dangerous or aggressive.
