Oddly enough, I have a couple of black swallowtail cats on the parsley. I haven't seen any adults…

Congrats Marna. It's nice to see those cats.

I was VERY surprised.

Last year those BSTs preffered my Parsleys over my Dills. I've but one parsley plant this year. Maybe it's time for me to stock them. lol.

I was out planting a bunch of zinnia earlier today and hardly finished when a Varigated Firtillary flew by!! I didn't have the camera outside, but I was sure excited!

This Red Admiral is from last week.

Sheila.. thanks for your advice, I will certainly do that.
I saw my first Hairstreak last night... I was more thrilled that I could identify it than anything! hahahaha

LindaTX8 ... maybe it's just that thread that was the problem as I know Cubits is no longer in operation ..it was supposed to get pulled last Friday as Dave didn't want a lawsuit yet I can still send emails.... now you have me concerned here!

I just looked up caterpillars on DBS page & I believe I have an Eastern Black Swallowtail caterpillar. Though I have sighted a Tiger Swallowtail flitting about also!

Cindy, the site is still in operation...so far. Today is the Friday deadline.

Well it is off line now, and there is a statement.

There is a yahoo site for Cubits regugees I've joined. Sorry if this is OT.

Went away for a few days and was happy to find that my two black swallowtails are still munching on the parsley. Seeing more butterflies now. I was in Boston over the weekend and saw a number of Tiger Swallowtails. Yay Summer.

jleigh, very pretty. I'm looking, searching for eggs and cats. Found neither. I did see some hairstreaks (sp?) and RA's flitting about.

I still have my ONE EBS caterpillar! hahaha..he's not growing too fast, but is growing! hahaha... I am very happy that it is still there as I always fear that birds/etc will get it like they did my Monarchs last year. However, this cat is in a little more secluded area away from most activity,

Ballston Lake, NY(Zone 5a)

i saw that little guy up here in the preserve. there were fields and fields of lupine, and only one or two butterflies fluttering around.
also saw a bunch of dusky wings. i'm searching for a place to get the specific variety of lupine, if you plant it they might come.

I am seeing a few more butterflies, but still pretty sparce. Dissapointed with my 7 varigated frittilary cats I brought in. Didn't get them soon enough evidentally, they are dying one by one from what looks like parasites, maybe tachinid flies.
The BST are making their chrysalis so I am still hopeful that they will emerge ok. The failures are just reinforcing the importance of bringing the eggs or first instars in before they are infected.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

That's a sad reminder of those common parasitic wasps and flies that infect the caterpillars. Last year I've had GF's and Moth's cats infested by them. No sign of eggs here though.

Maypop are beginning to make flowers. I'm ready for those GFs.

I have enjoyed everyone's pictures and sightings and
Viceroy, your comment solved a mystery for me! Last week about 7 pm, I saw a dozen or so butterflies that I thought were GFs but I couldn't get a good look because they were swirling madly around a grouping of trees and shrubs (oak, dogwood, buckeye). It looked like they were chasing each other! So now I see they were probably looking for the perfect roost.

Thanks for sharing!

I regret the pic. didn't come clear. But it's must be one of my earliest Sulphurs of the season that landed on the Bebalms today.

Wow, Lily, your bee balm is blooming! None of my CVs of it are and we're in the same zone.

My gosh, I found a Mourning Cloak this afternoon!!

I know those down south see them all the time, but DH and I were walking around the back yard this evening and saw two Tiger STs at the same time. I have never raised them so I am excited to know they are hanging around tonight.

Kissimmee, FL

Cedar, it is really cool to watch them at the end of the day and when it is too hot. They have taken a liking to some of my bamboo plants. And with all the room there is they always seem to land on top of each other. I have some resident Queens who were using my Tabebueia as their roost this year and last years did too but I had to take it down because of some nasty sickness.

cedar18, beebalms bloom early due to different microclimate. I've a group sitting in a different spot, not too far from this group that's barely a foot tall (so it is going to be a while before they bloom). Those are sitting on lean soil. Dried condition and receive some evening sun bloom earlier than others.

Wow Nan Mourning Cloark. How pretty. I haven't seen those here. Sheila, good luck with those TSTs.
