Please let me know if you've tried germinating eucalyptus and how successful you were.
Who's tried germinating eucalyptus?
I grew some lemon eucalyptus from seed last year.I don't remember doing anything special with it.Ended up with about 6 plants.I transplanted them in the ground. They grew well all summer.Dug them up in the fall and put them in a pot.Trying to over winter them indoors.I have 3 left. They look bad.Almost all of the leaves have fallen off. They need to be outside, but its still to cold.I will be really surprised if they make it.I may try to grow them again from seed someday. But next time,I will treat them as an annual. They are to difficult to over winter indoors for me.Edge
I saw a eucalyptus tree in town. It has to be about 30-40 feet tall and is absolutely gorgeous. The trunk had kind of a twisted appearance and the leaves were out of this world. I didn't know they grew so fast and well here.
I germinate them by sowing on Jiffy Mix in deli containers, then covering lightly with vermiculite, and placing on a heating mat. Sometimes Eucs from colder places need cold stratification to germinate, I tend to prefer tropicals, so they have never needed it.
My experience is that they germinate easily. A good source for seeds and information is www.jlhudson.net. They have many different euc. seeds.

My wife bought some seeds that were listed as ten years old and she just put them in 4" pots and watered. Almost everyone came up and grew like crazy. We have left them in the ground for two Winters and they even came back this Spring, it got down to the teens several times and once down to 5.
wow
angedawn47, I'd be interested in some
eucalyptus seed if you got some from that tree. I have interesting seeds to trade you if you want. D-mail me.
Did you try planting a sprig of a branch? Sounds like a euc grows like a willow.

Eucalyptus seeds germinate easily as long as they are surface sown. They're too small to have the reserves necessary to make their way to the surface if buried.
Just sprinkle them on the surface of a mix with good drainage, keep them warm and moist. A pane of glass or plastic wrap helps keep them from drying out.
Do check the climate zones for each species. Snowgum Eucalyptus will tolerate major cold, but many are from the hot flatlands of Australia and don't understand winter. No point in starting a 60' tree that will die in September.
