These are aphids (plant lice) and need to be addressed with extreme prejudice. Applications of insecticidal soap should discourage them...

May I add those aphids are pretty creative in forms. Some of them appear yellow, other are green, these are brownish black (in which I didn't recognize). Your macro-image is so clear in in good details. Thanks suunto.

Aphids are intriguing from yet another aspect; some species appear to get their color by making their own carotenoids, compounds which up to very recently were thought to be manufactured only by plants. Also, the genetic apparatus that allows this manufacture apparently was 'borrowed' from a fungus in the very dim, distant past - see http://tinyurl.com/2ank9am for details.

Thank you 1wish1. Also it's good to know that these aphids are favorite meals for ladybugs. In small colonies, I can easily wash them off with stream of jet water from a water hose. I was told that once they are on the ground they can't get back up and dry out. In this method, and having ladybugs around. We're keeping the garden environment-friendly.
