We have seen several of these inside the house lately. Would like to know what they might be.
CLOSED: Segmented beetle?
This is a ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae); likely a false bombardier beetle, Galerita bicolor - see http://tinyurl.com/3x5wqvf for an image. They are general predators on other small arthropods.
suunto, certainly looks like a positive ID, thanks for quick response. :-)
Are these ground beetles harmless and do they pose any problems?
They are absolutely harmless to humans. The only 'problem' they pose is that some people simply don't like sharing their home with insects of any sort; beneficial ones included...
suunto...thanks for the additional info. We live in the country and are accustomed to lots of insects and spiders. Just had not seen this one before, particularly several inside. I'll be sure to tell the wife so she won't freak out. ;-)
