Insect seen today in Thompson Wildlife Management Area near Front Royal, Va.

This is a common scorpionfly (Mecoptera: Panorpidae) in the genus Panorpa - see http://tinyurl.com/2ccp8un for an example. They are general predators on other small arthropods; I have seen one take on a Japanese beetle!
