CLOSED: What kind of beetle?..
I think it is a Horned Passalus (Odontotaenius disjunctus). It is the only Bess Beetle common in the eastern U.S.
These are very interesting beetles in that they appear subsocial, living in family groups where both the adults and larvae communicate by stridulation - see http://tinyurl.com/kkf8qy
