Conversations, questions, and reminiscences about our spring round-up.

Crossville, TN

Randy...I enjoyed meeting you and Lisa...and you remind me of Postmandug...whom I met twice at the KY RU...he is a hoot too!!! Jo

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

DP,
Please tell Lisa that I found the matching saucer for the pot containing the pregnant onion she liked. Also with all the excitement, I forgot to give you them dayliliy's for the school.
The sweater's owner has been located.
All is good! : - )
Oh, how is Fred doing?

Fred is in heaven. He has three VERY attentive hens that are always fighting for the spot next to him on the roost pole. Quite a sight in the evening. I'll have to post some pictures of the four of them.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Thanks for starting the new thread too, DP.
I'm glad Fred is happy. Sadly, we lost a rooster, don't know why, this past week. I figured they were fighting and he lost. So thanks again for saving Fred. : - )

DP When you said Fred was in heaven, I thought He'd died. Rosters are in a different heaven when they meet all the virgins hens however. DP what do I do with the black elephant ears. Had them in water for a couple of days, now what???

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Plant them in a shady spot.

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Sylvia I thought the same thing at first too!! Glad he is doing so well!!

This is our mini chicken. The on the right we think got stomped or kicked by the horse when just a few weeks old. My daughter nursed her back to health, she refused to give up even when the rest of us said there was no way she was going to survive. That is her sister on the left. Both were hatched at the same time. You can see the difference in size. Those two are smaller than their brother and sister who are a bit bigger.

This is brother and sister. They are frizzle mixes

No, Freddie's not dead! He's in heaven on a roost pole.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

marie,
I think you've raised a compassionate daughter. I hope I get to meet her someday. : - )
Critters can surprise you. Fred surprised me. I didn't even know he was half-blind, but that isn't too surprising given the # of roosters I have. What is surprising is that Bantam Rooster hasn't been killed by the larger roosters. He's a wiley one. : - )
We started out with Rhode Island Reds, but they didn't survive well. So we brought in some araconda hens. They are the half wild guys that lay odd colored eggs mostly greenish or sometimes blue. Then someone gave me this weird rooster with the crest on his head. We called him Spike. His daughter is the white one. Mainly we have a mix of chickens that are survivors. It wasn't until the last year or so that we got them all inside the pen. Before that they were free range, which is messy.
Still getting every plant settled. It's taking me longer than anticipated, but with these nice warm temps, I hope to soak out some pain and get 'er done.
Thanks to all for your generosity.

She is Jules. My nephew left a bird at the house last week that he thought had fallen from a nest and since he could not fidn where it went he brought it home to me. It turned out to be a killdeer whois a ground bird and needed not to be with us as it is an insect eating bird. We could not figure out exactly where he got him from and the little bird died. My daughter sobbed because she was unable to help him but she gave him a beautiful buriel in our pet/ anything found that has died cemetary.

She gets upset if some one harms a ladybug.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Perhaps next time you can place a cage with no bottom near his food supply with some water till he is ready to be on his own, Marie?
If he was a baby that's even harder. There are bird rescue groups around. Have your DD google them with your help. Maybe, that is something she would enjoy volunteering her time to do?
I carry spiders outside, so I totally get it. I do kill ants though.
Every morning starts with a tour of the pool to make sure no frogs or toads have been stranded. Now that it's not raining they haven't been going in the pool.
Back on topic, working slowly, but now I know where to plant almost everything I received from you all at the RU. Such a bounty! Not just of plants but also of friendship. : - )

Smart girl as well as compassionate! Ladybugs are precious.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Randy, did you get a chance to talk to your son about the hoses we discussed? Just wondered, also can you give me some hints on the exhaust gopher getter?! I wanted to see if I'm doing anything wrong. I didn't get much of chance to ask you more at the RU.
Thanks so much.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Louise, I've got a small case of C.R.S. (Can't Remember Sh....oops Stuff) and I'm not sure what hoses you are referring to.

As to the gopher exterminator.....I know it's important to NOT rev the engine and just let it idle. That and packing moist dirt around the hose where it goes into the run are the only vital things I'm sure of.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I've done exactly what you said about the gopher exterminator and they're still wreaking havoc.
The hoses you were asking your son about were the drip lines...I told you we were replacing the soakers with drip. (I have the same CRS disease!)
Thanks Randy.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Oh yeah! The brand name is "NetaFim". Digg also makes one. They both require an inline filter ahead of the hose. It's what I'm putting in my veggie garden.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Thank you, I'll check it out!

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Can you tell me the difference between NetaFim and the usual drip lines I'm putting in? Looks like the connections are metal?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

The connectors are plastic barbed fittings that go inside the tubing as opposed to the usual tubing going inside the fitting. The emmiters are built-in and the tubing comes with either emmiters every 12 inches or every 18 inches.

surfcity,
If I can stop laughing, maybe I can tell you how talented you are? Nope, still cackling here! Oh my!
I recognize the background in the photo as the courtyard. I thought at first it was some unrelated newspaper article. You amaze me! : - )
STILL LOL! : [- D

This RU screwed up my recently good eating spell. I have not been consistently eating good since. grrrr! You good cooks you!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Still haven't had a chance to show DH those photos, but it's been busy. Prom next weekend, then the Blues Festival the following weekend, then my ES turns 21 the week after that, and then YS's graduation, and who knew?
I have to go order prom flowers. Oh boy what fun! San Diego here we come. Since our YS STILL doesn't have his driver's license we will be going to the prom with him. Sort of. We'll be renting a room in the same hotel where the prom is.
I absolutely refuse to pay for their prom photos, so I will be there long enough to take photos of my handsome son and his "Dutch"Date. Which I'll share with his "date".
Then when the prom is over, he can come to our room and we don't have to drive or worry. His dates' parents will be bringing her, and I don't know what their plans are.
I want to explore the Gaslamp district. I guess we'll be close to it.
ES gets to stay at home and do the chores. : - )
Fred has it easy! : - )
Flowers, I gotta order the flowers!

Hi all

Sorry I've been silent for these past weeks. But I have a gr8 excuse! I now have solar water panels on my roof!!! Yay! I spent the better part of yesterday and all of today on the roof drilling holes and dragging panels around but I'm DONE!!!!! Tomorrow we do the pressure test to see if all that work paid off and there aren't any leaks. Cross your fingers!!!

Irises!!! Temecula Valley Irises http://temeculavalleyiris.com/1194/index.html is closing it's doors? fields? forever! This Friday (May 14th) is their one and only (and last) day they are open to the public. A few of us from the southern CA area are going in on a great deal they offered. For about $10 (or less depending on how many of us wind up going) an iris lover gets a huge bag of four different colors of iris (you get to choose your own).

My other gardening friends (yes, I've strayed. You DG enablers are not my only gardening friends! Can you ever forgive me?!?!?! ^_^ ) have formed a kind of iris buying co-op. We are meeting at the iris farm to buy our bag and then dividing them up amongst ourselves. So if there are six of us we'd each wind up with 24 different colored iris that cost about 41 cents each color. Kewl!!! No? Does this even make sense? I can see it so clearly in my head!

If any of you DGers are interested in joining us to share the wealth LMK. If you can't make it I can probably pick yours up if you want. But don't blame if all your purple irises are gone! I'll just tell you they didn't have any more. ^_^ Bwhahahaha!!!

Thanks guys!

Cayte

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

That's okay Cate, I got lots of purple ones, I'm interested in the other colors. I'll be talking to weegy about iris, since I missed this sale. She's been selling them too.

Oooo, SW you should have seen some of the colors that were out there! When mine are ready to share I'll be sure to bring some of them to one of the SoCal RUs.

I came home with five walmart bags crammed full. ^_^

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Too bad for me. That sucks, I just got this message.

Great for yall though.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Me too. See what happens when you don't read every forum every day?

Hey Cate, what would you be able to do with 24 colors? There would only be just so many shades of purple in there. BTW, where did you get your (purple) T-shirt you wore at the RU? I have another friend who is gaga over purple. I would change the neckline and add jewels for her - she is just that kind of lady.

Round Rock, TX(Zone 8b)

Ha QG, I came away with 35 different colors! But not all mine and not all purple. I did get Darkside, Interpol, Son of Dracula, Space Odyssey, Jurassic Park and a few more purple. Can you tell I was buying with my 12yos in mind? ^-^

Send your friend to www.thepurplestore.com to get her purple fix. Although why they list purple duct tape under the men's section is beyond me. So sexist! ^-^

Happy Purpling!

Cayte

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

I used to love purple more than every color, part because I did, part because of Donny Osmond, part because it is a Biblical color representing God's color. I still love it but have added the rest of the world's colors in the mix. Too bad for me, that I missed that big score. Happy for you, it is so cool to be afforded such a rare opportunity.

Yup, you snooze you loose.
My best friend ever, Star, her favorite color was purple. I'll be planting the corner with purple iris's for her. I like purple too, but that's all I have blooming except for one white iris. Oh well.
