I saw this guy on my Clethra 'Ruby Spice'...It's about 1/2 inch long. I know it might be too similar looking to a ton of other things but does anyone have a guess as to what it is--particularly if it is friend or foe?

There are indeed a number of species whose caterpillars have a similar appearance. One possibility is the winter moth, Operophtera brumata - see http://tinyurl.com/244ot2v
