Love that digitalis! So statuesque!
Color 'waves' - has anyone else noticed this?
I didn't know I could grow it - I'd been trying to grow digitalis mertonensis for years. Pam sent me a GREAT specimen.
Donna, I'm so glad your digitalis is doing so well! It looks great!
Pippi, my foxgloves and lupines have been very easy to grow. I winter sowed them, and then transplanted them to my gardens when they had a few of their true sets of leaves on them. The only thing that I do differently than a lot of people I know, is that I never ever use wood mulch. I always use composted leaves as a mulch and fertilizer. I spread a 2-3 layer, early in the spring, and then I'm pretty much done for the year. If some spots look bare throughout the summer I'll add a little more. I also sprinkle some osmocote slow release fertilizer around my plants when I'm spreading my compost. Other than that, I think that I've just been lucky. Thanks so much for the compliments about my garden!
Oh yes, let's get those babies some Osmocote!
pgt, thanks for the tip on using the composted leaves as your mulch.
I need to get out there early in spring and spread my leaf compost around but I'm always afraid I'll suffocate my re-seeders(digitalis, verbena, cosmos, etc.). But maybe not so much. Oftentimes by the time the reseeders come up my returning perennials are too far along and the garden is too crowded.
I am going to try to direct sow some digitalis seeds in the garden later this summer to see what I get. Most times I start the seeds in some kind of protected container or wintersow them.
Iam waiting for things to start blooming again, everything spring and early summer came on hard and fast and is all done blooming, waiting on foxglove and mexican sunflowers ,cones are blooming, blkeyed susan, and many others .my ws petunias are finally blooming a bit,all my ws were soooo slloww this yr ???? Everything is really GREEN !!! We have been getting lots of rain, have not had to water much at all..YEA RAHcome on COLOR>>>>>>
This is an old thread, but I had to comment. I walked in my garden this morning and thought - "Wow, do I have the 'blues'".
No, I wasn't depressed. To the contrary, I was exhilarated to see all of the shades of blue and blue-violet in bloom today! For some reason, my pictures seem 'washed out' - I think it must have been due to the bright sun at 8:00 am. Of course, there are lots of other colors in bloom today, but for some reason the color blue seemed to dominate.
When I take photos, I sometimes forget to check all that's in the image. Obviously, my bucket I carry to collect weeds and deadheads as I wander around my garden each morning should have been hidden from view!

I think it's sensational!
BEAUTFUL, thanks for posting those wonderful pictures.
yes, beautiful. And thanks for the larger views, it's nice to see the context of your whole yard, the gate, the lamppost, etc. Very nice
Any new waves Leawood? I'm temporarily away from home and missing my garden!! I'm thinking my pink lillies should be in bloom before I'm back this weekend.
Leawood, you flowers are always so pretty. It is going to be 118 here today and so very little flowers are growing.
The dry heat is actually worse for the plants. Better for humans though.
Is that why you guys grow so much cactus and such?
Marcia
WOW Lea, you much have a HUGE garden to have that much pink and not think of it as the dominant color! I LOVE pink! My Stargazers are in full bloom and I'm in heaven.
pgt What tree is that in your first picture...it is very cool looking.
