CLOSED: found while digging in garden

This guy is in Houston. We were digging in the garden, thought it was a bulb, then YIKES, it moved! About 3in long, almost an inch wide...

This is a pupa of a large sphinx moth (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/2ffzfbk for an image. The 'handle' is a sheath over the developing proboscis.
