This half spider is black with 2 tiny orange spots on the sides of it. The larvae caused the apple tree to knot up where ever the were bedded. I used soapy water treating it like a spider mite. Some of the babies looked like a type of caterpiller.

The image is focused on the background rather than on the critter you want identified. Please try again; from what little I can see, it resembles a lady beetle larva, which would not be a cause of damage to the tree.

You are exactly right. I googled lady beetle and the image is a match. Thank you.

The larva really stunted the growth of the apple tree. I thought ladybugs were good for your garden since they eat aphids.

I do not believe that the lady beetles would in any way cause stunting of your tree, you need to look for another cause.

I will get some better photos to upload. After researching you are right lady beetles wouldnt do the damage to the tree.
