Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Critter I read that article need to read the one about slug control but afraid of what I'm going to read lol This one I bought at Wal Mart is suppose to be safe for pets but I bet it isn't! I still haven't put any out because I'm afraid of it for my cat that goes out :) We are right by the hosta all the time.

Sharon, yes that's the Marsha I'll probably end up losing mine too they are so tiny mine germinated the 19th of April so they really aren't that old but still LOL I'm trying to watch them like a hawk I have them on the front porch so I can, sorry you lost yours I can see where it would be easy to do we'll see if I get to grow these out lol When I transplanted them I couldn't see any root at all they were so tiny but they must have one they are still green LOL

Critter-

I read that link. I agree, I don't use poisons. Even thought I don't have pets in the yard. I only use smell deterrents - rotten egg/cayenne spray. That's why I was questioning the use the moth balls. They are deterrent by smell, but my concern is what they do to the soil when they break down.

Those moth balls must take a long time to break down I had thrown some in vole holes and not sure if they threw them out or if they washed out one year but the next spring I found them laying on the ground in several places in my middle bed when it wasn't full of weeds and they looked the same as when I put them in the holes the fall before I just picked them up and threw them away. I wonder what they leave in the ground too.

I don't use pesticides I have the insect thing going on in my gardens so don't want to upset the apple cart took a long time to get to this point :) The only thing I do use is weed killer and that's not good but I really need it making these large beds I just use it on the grass that the carpet doesn't cover so it isn't that much but a little of that stuff probably goes a long way as far as hurting anything in my yard.

Question about the Crossandra since I've never grown it before will it bloom the first year is it worth me putting it in a pot with my EE? I'm potting it up now so if someone could answer soon as they can please :) Would it be better if I just put it in the ground than to put it in a pot then plant it this fall? Thanks!

Quote from perenniallyme :
Patricia, what did you get from Bluestone? I can't believe you have flying squirrels just miles from me. I've never seen one and thought they were some kind of exotic creature from the tropical rain forest or something.

I ordered AGASTACHE Black Adder, PENSTEMON barbatus Rondo Mix (like I don't have enough already with seds everyone sent!), PYRETHRUM Mixed , SALVIA pratensis Swan Lake, AGASTACHE Honey Bee Blue, POLEMONIUM Apricot Delight, ECHINACEA purpurea Double Delight, and HYDRANGEA quercifolia Sikes Dwarf.

As for flying squirrels, there is a northern type. They are smaller than a gray squirrel. The almost look like a chipmunk (about the same size), but have no stripes, and have a bushy tail like a gray squirrel.
I thought they were not in our area. The wildlife guy said in the city they are not common, but in my area where there are more woods they are very common. (I have 300+ acres that is wooded across the street from me). I thought he was crazy and trying to sell me something, then I looked it up. Also co-workers told me that they had the same problem and it is very common.

Wow, thanks for the links to the flying squirrel info. They look like a bat with a tail when ready to take off. And doesn't the one at 33 days look like he's smirking and trying to say "I'm coming for your plants and there's nothing you can do about it!" I guess there are a few benefits to living in the concrete and asphalt part of the world.

I just tried agastache for the first time - that orange and apricot sprite that I'm embarassed to say I don't remember who contributed to the piggy swap. I like it, though I don't know why I expected it to be taller, and I probably don't have it in enough sun.

Your agastaches will likely be taller next year. :-)

Sad to hear about your loss of your Little One Ants...we are animal lovers here

Our dog, Holly, keeps digging in this one spot I've planted some seedlings!!! I've resorted to putting tomato cages around them now to see if that will protect them
