Seed Swap & Chat # 56 Whacha planting ??
Ella -- I decided not to move the second year HH. they are in the ground, and i'm sure with a huge tap root.
Yesterday i planted 2 little Black Current Whirls. I can't wait til next year to see them bloom.
way back when, i asked about transplanting Bronze Fennel... well, i finally dug one up.. and wow what a long tap root on it. I got it in a pot quickly and watered it... so far so good. .... but i wont do that again. If i plan to give some away, i'll do it from seed. ... which i dont think i had any of -- gave it all away.
I have a huge one in my rose bed... i'll make sure to harvest seeds this fall.
Yippee!!!!! I first.. I first!!!!! Hahha : )
Going out in a few to start doing some transplanting myself and figure out what to do with 20 some plants I bought last year that are not what they were supposed to be.
Singing Wolf.. Did you have your RU yet? How did it go.
I love hollyhocks. My one friend her's will get 10-12' tall. Looks impressive from the road but a neck breaker when ya looking at it up close.
I also wanted to get some Amaranthus planted. not sure if i'll get it done, but they are quite crowded in their 'half gal' container.
we are heading north this morning ... but it's still not even 7am. but the sun is shining... supposed to rain "again" today. we shall see what i accomplish before packing the car.
Oh Terese you are going to shoot me I'm not even wrapping that hosta up today it's freezing outside with the wind is blowing like crazy I wish my thermometer was working but Tony knocked it down on the ground when he was pressure washing the house and broke it so I need to get another one I was wanting to put more plants out in the little greenhouses today but doesn't look like that is going to happen either it's just too cold out :( It’s not suppose to warm up again until about Wed. Hope you have a good trip!
Meredith good luck with your tomato plant :)
Ella, the weather has been to messy to get out and wet my soil in the wheel barrow I just can’t seem to do that anyway it would be a lot easier but this weather has been stormy all weekend and now it has turned cold I don’t go out when it’s cold lol I have been putting the soil less mix in the microwave seems to help with it soaking up water but it still takes a while :)
HEY Lea.... if the hosta is NOT dug up yet... do not sweat it. You can ship in the fall. really -- i's not a bit deal.
I'm up in Wisc where it's low 60's and sunny.
I'm needing some help, was hoping tcs could help, but looks like she is out of pocket :(
ants
OH ants.. obviously I dont spend a lot of time over there,.,,, just not enough time in a day.
can Ella help...
Oh, there you are, not really a cubit question. I am using picasa for my pics & put the url in for my banner but it won't show up.

Hi all! My all winter renovation project is complete and tenants in - (TG!) , but I didn't have the energy to plant nearly as much as I wanted to plant this winter. However, this is what I've planted in the garden from my indoor sowing - (a lot of it from you guys - Thanks!) :
(just a few plants of each. I only grew one six-pack of each kind)
rudbeckia (about 6 different kinds)
asclepias - pink swamp milkweed
asclepias - scarlet blood flower
blue balloon flower
double blue balloon flower
aquilegia - clementine salmon rose
aquilegia - (Lea, the firecracker one - we'll see if it comes true)
a dwarf lupine mix
double mixed campanula
Ella's blue and white geraniums - forget what they're called (hooray!)
some daylilies
belamcanda chinesis
A bunch of other stuff is coming up in wintersown containers. I'm really excited that I'm getting some aconitums, astrantia, angel's halo tricyrtis and other stuff I can't think of, but they're mostly still tiny. I didn't make a list and couldn't get organized.
Meredith, have you been to Mason Hollow Nursery? I found their website last fall - or did you or someone else tell me about them? I'm anxiously awaiting their opening so I can spend the gift certificate my brother got me for Christmas. I've already asked them to reserve these for me: corydalis china blue, another blue corydalis, a coppery-orange flowered epimedium and a couple of unusual tricyrtis. oooooeeeeiii!
Per-me, so glad your tennents are in and you can really get into your gardening now.
I have some big pots out my back door that I kept lilies and tulips in over the winter. So a couple weeks ago, I threw in some seeds to go with the bulbs. Well, some small plants are germinating, but I'm not sure which are flowers and which are seeds ... Yikes. Guess I'll wait a little on them and make my decision on what to weed out later ...
I have some lemongrass growing nicely and am getting ready to plant it out. It's about 12-18" tall already, and getting some seeds on it! Yikes! It looks so much like other weedy, tall grasses that I clipped some of it to smell, just to make sure... and it doesn't smell at all lemony. Does anyone know, at that size should it smell like lemon? Just hoping I have the right thing!
Sharon good to hear you got all straighted out at home and have your tenants that's happy news :) Renovating is such a job and bet you thought you would never have it all done I've got a lot to do here and haven't even started lol
Just wanted to let you know that I finally have little tiny 'Marsha' seedlings but have a lot of that green moss on top of the dirt I stuck the seed tray back outside hoping that will help a bit they are so tiny I'm afraid to try and transplant them right now when they dry out a bit I'll put some H202 to them. Sorry to say I haven't gotten the toad lilies planted yet hopefully here in the next week cause it shouldn't take them that long to come up I hope :) I don't think they need the cold to germinate do they?
Everything here seems to be blooming early like my blue indigo is in bud right now seems like that doesn't bloom until later in the summer usually. My Coral Bells are sending shoots up too just wish my astilbies would bloom so I can make sure what colors I have in the ground already in my mini shade garden.
It's pouring outside I'm so sick of rain since the whole weekend and this summer we probably won't get any! The ground was so dry before the rain started and was starting to crack already I'm sure it's glued back together by now lol
I’ve still got holly hocks to plant yet and my sunflowers and not about to start my morning glory seeds yet with so many darn tomatoes and peppers trying to get transplanted I wouldn’t have the time to transplant them yet if I did start the MG’s and really need to get my moon vine started at least I got it started so late last year it barely made it to bloom before it got too cold my neighbors missed the aroma in the summer last year until they bloomed they kept asking me about them lol Yet they won’t grow one when I offer them seedlings lol
kl-
Lemon grass should smell "lemony" like lemon balm does from the start. You can tell if you have Lemon grass, by cutting back 1 stalk. The stalk should have a white center (that's the part used in cooking) that and that has a lemon-ish smell as well. It all depends upon how big your plant is, whether it have the white centers in the stalk. I usually don't see the centers until the plant is around a foot or more taller.
Thanks toofew. Now I'm hoping to regain some sanity.
Lea, I'm really glad you got the gentiana makinoi "Marsha" seedlings. You're going to love the plants. They're a lot more robust than any other gentians I've had. I wish I had started seeds of them myself, as I only have one plant - maybe I'll get some babies around it. I really hate that moss. I get it in lots of my seed trays.
I did get some tricyrtis babies indoors, but a lot of them died. Maybe because I didn't take good enough care of them - not sure. I have some I wintersowed that are just coming up, and I think they'll do better.
I can't wait to see my astilbes too. I planted several new ones last year and some I haven't seen flower yet. I don't know why I only discovered them the year before last - or why I thought they'd be boring plants before I saw my brother's new one the year before. I really love them now.
It's rainy today, which is why I'm here indoors. I don't want to jinx it by saying that we've had great gardening weather for a few weeks now, and I've been taking full advantage. The forecast has been saying rain, rain, rain, but we've only been having a few sprinkles here and there for the most part. I really should get dressed and clean the house for the first time in months, but, well, it's easier and more fun to talk about plants.
Thanks Herbspirit... I'm thinking it's not :-( Even got brave and tasted it... nothing lemony) Here's a photo with a closeup of the cross-section, it has a little bend on the larger stalks right near the soil, which is also shown here. No white center in any part of the largest stalks. They are about 12" tall now...
Actually it does look like it. Maybe just wait a little longer.
It doesn't taste like lemon, just smells like it.
Lynn, I'm going out tomorrow so the catgrass will get mailed
to you.
Lea, My apologies for not getting back to you either.
The "shower" we were supposed to have turned into a windy
torrent of rain & all the flats I had outside "hardening off" either
overturned or became saturated. So I had to transplant Everything.
Took me 2 entire days. Just when I thought I was organized....
Oh Cris and every one laughs at me here because I get upset if I can't hear the temps for the nights! People that don't grow from seed just don't understand! We had storms and I had to tie my little big lots greenhouses down I already have them staked from the inside but put old rugs on top of them incase the gutters over run on top of them and tie string around the whole thing from top to bottom so the rug doesn't blow away we have winds when we have storms that are awful most of the time!
So sorry to hear about you having to transplant everything hope it didn't set you back too much! And I hope your babies made it thru it!
Did I mention on here I made a greenhouse out of my truck lol I potted my dahlias and some caladiums up can't remember what else but they were all annuals and my truck has a topper on it so figured that would be a perfect spot for them to keep them warm lol Now my neighbor is using my truck so I hope he doesn't turn any of my pots over his transmission went out on his truck he knows my plants are back there so he had better be a good boy!
Lea I know what you mean about the needing to hear the weather forecast before going to bed and also understand your problem with the wind. We live in a very windy spot. Kind of makes me think of Kansas. I would love to have a wind break but think I am a little old for starting such a thing.
I have heard it all and leave it to you Lea to invent it. Using a truck for a greenhouse. Makes since to me!!!! Too bad mine doesn't have a topper but it is inside the garage but it is more like a barn LOL
Cris, thanks in advance for the catgrass. I am anxiously looking forward to it.
Is there anything you are looking for?
Hey Veronica :) I have to know the weather before dark incase I need to wrap my little greenhouses up too sometimes they look like little people all wraped up in their blankets lol I should put hats on them LOL I NEED a real greenhouse without all the heating bills to go with it!
:-) I used to rely on my DH to tell me the weather, as he was always checking it to plan his runs and bike rides. Now he asks me what it's going to be like, since I'm constantly keeping an eye on it!
Lea, using the truck is toooo funny! I need to pot up my dahlias and calla lillies, should get that done today.
Lea, my DH & I got a real chuckle out of you using the truck.
He doesn't have a topper on his & is planning to go out kayaking
this weekend so it wouldn't work for us anyway.
God bless the man - he bought me a greenhouse frame but
hasn't put it together so NEXT year......
Most everything seems to be ok although I'm concerned about
my squash. The flowers that were on it all died :(
Lynn don't worry about an exchange. I have more seeds in the
fridge than I can possibly get planted this year. Mostly put
aside the ones that you can plant before frosts in autumn.
Long term planning you know.
Lovely day here - hope everyone else had a nice one too &
actually got to enjoy it.
Cris
Today was way toowindy to be enjoyable outdoors, ya know that kinda wind that feelslike it is going to knock you down or at least blow ya back a few steps? That's the kind we had. :) At least it was sunny and 60 F. It feltgood to see the sun after 3 days of dark skies.
Thanks for the luck Lea, the tomato top doesn't look dead yet so that's a good sign it might be making roots! :)
Perenniallyme, I've never been to that nursery. I have heard of it though.... some Dgers on the NE forum talked about how great it was last year. If you need Hosta, I guess that's the place to go, they have a lot! :)
We had that same wind today, Meredith. I could only spend a few hours in it.
I'm not too big on hostas, but I did discover one that I had to have at the roundup in western MA last summer. I might have been able to tell you whose magnificent gardens I found it in if I hadn't just returned from drinking most of the bottle of wine I brought to our neighborhood crime watch meeting. On the other hand, I might not be able to tell you anyway, because I'm mentally challenged or synapse-deficient in the part of the brain that remembers names of human beings, but the hosta was called "Remember Me". It's a smallish one with irregular dark green edges and areas of yellow and white and, if I remember right, possibly other bits of green. Anyway, it was really lovely. I just bought one from a seller on Ebay, and was a bit shocked when the teeniest bit of hosta root arrived, but it now has one leaf opening, and I guess I'm glad to have it. The same person sent me a very nice size peony - Abalone Pearl, though it was all hunched over in a way that didn't seem to match the "freshly dug" description.
We have about 25 mh winds here today geesh! We have a beautiful day other than the wind here and of course I have to go to town AGAIN today :( If I could just stay away from town I could get something done! Going to town is like going to 'The Hotel California' you can get in but you can never get out LOL
I got all of my veggies planted before the rain tonight :) And I caught a snake :)

ants
Ants, I checked out your photos... Next time you find a snake, get the cat away from it and leave it alone. It didn't need to have the experience of being wrassled into a bucket... and you are fortunate that it didn't get scared enough to strike either you or the cat. That's a copperhead -- one of the most mellow snakes around, in my opinion, but it does happen to be a pit viper. As in venomous.
Here's an info page with photos: http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/gaston/Pests/reptiles/copperhead-1.htm
You can tell pit vipers by the pronounced triangular shape of the head (the venom sacs are just behind the jaw, creating those bulging "cheeks" at the side of the face) and by the slitted pupils (the eyes of non-venomous snakes have round pupils). Other than coral snakes (which are so shy they're almost never seen), pit vipers are the only venomous snakes in the US (other varieties are rattlesnakes and cottonmouths).
Venomous or not, any snake will bite you if it's scared enough, and that can be traumatic for both you and the snake. The best idea for dealing with snakes is not to mess with them... let them go about their business, and you go about yours. They are fabulous for pest control in the garden!
I know you just wanted to take a closer look... but you could have been hurt by this one. I'm glad both you and the snake are fine! And I wouldn't worry about having this guy around... as you saw, they don't tend to be aggressive. LOL, I am guessing he high tailed it out of there though when you released him!
Copperhead ... scary! Only snake I will touch is the garter snake, which by the way has bit me before.
Actually, I think garter snakes are one of the most aggressive... fortunately, they are also fairly puny, and non-venomous. LOL Copperheads are the only venomous snake I'll willingly handle.. used to remove them from my landlady's kitchen from time to time... but you can bet I was careful!
I have a pair of garter snakes in my wood pile. I just leave them be, as i feel they help keep the mice population under control. I love watching them.... and really have to watch for them when mowing the lawn... thankfully in the 8yrs i've been there.. .i have only killed one.[on accident of course]
I can't wait to get home.. i have a lot of planting to do.
I haven't talked to my kid that is watching my seedlings.. .but he told DH the high winds blew some over and commented that some were tossed about and he has no idea what they were.
But -- i'll only have a few days to get most everything in the ground.
Ack! We were on a field trip a few weeks ago, and the kids found a baby snake in the park. The teacher rescued it from the boys who were kicking at it, and held it in her hand so everyone could see it.... there was debate at the time, but now I'm sure, it was a teeny copperhead!
I wintersowed many seeds. This is my first time wintersowing, but I am thrilled with the germination rates. Not everything germinated, yet, but my success rate is much better than with indoor sowing. It is a great method for people, like me, who have limited space for light shelves indoors.
My seedlings are still small with their first leaves, but I planted out baby clumps of snow in summertime yesterday. I have a slate stone/paver walkway. I want to grow groundcovers between the pavers. Most had only their first set of leaves, but the milk container was drying out quickly and the roots filled the soil. We'll see how they do. I am tempted to take pinches of seedlings from some jugs and get them started in the garden. I think they may grow faster there. First, i have a couple more roses to find homes for (I know that my garden is packed, but can't resist a couple more...). They are floribundas -Julia Child, Easy Does It, Grus Au Achen (?sp) - they could go in pots, but they will overwinter better in the garden.
I sprinkled a few annuals - cosmos, zinnias-around. Have more to do today, as soon as the sun moves past the garden. My veggies are really behind this year. I ran out of room inside, so I "spring sowed" them in soda bottles. I have them in the sun to hurry them along.
I had so much fun with the swap and am having so much fun playing with my seeds and chatting with the fellow piggies!
Tiny baby venomous snakes are as poisonous as the larger ones one should never pick up one esp. if they ‘think’ it’s a baby copper head or venomous that’s one thing that gets you, a lot of baby snakes look alike when they are small. We had an incident here at the lake where a kid was playing with a bunch of baby snakes and died before EMS could get there thinking they were baby garter snakes!
I had a pet garter snake for about two or three years and moved out with mom and dad and mom wouldn’t let me keep it in the house so I had to keep it in the garage when winter was approaching I had to turn it lose because I was afraid it would die not having enough ground to hibernate in and took it up in the field to let it lose well the sucker wouldn’t run off it just sat there and I was afraid a hawk or something would get it so I stomped my foot at it and it raised up like a cobra lol Flattened his head out just like one never knew they would do that then he played dead like a hognose snake it was so funny for a few years I saw a snake skin by mom’s roses but never saw him but know it was him because of being by the garage where he had been caged up for the year.
Garter snakes in the wild only live about three years in captivity they live five years because they don’t have to forage for food.
I had a bunch of canterbury bell seedlings and now just a few it's been so wet in my jugs and they don't like that it's been raining all weekend so I had to put them in the garage to dry out a bit so I could at least salvage a few of them!
GardenQuilts so glad you had such success with your WS seedlings! Welcome to WS! ;)
Wintersowing is so much easier than starting seeds inside. And more successful, for me anyway. Wish i could wintersow everything! I found that the soda bottles worked better for me than the milk jugs. Good thing, because I don't drink milk. The milk jugs started drying out in the warmer weather, but the soda bottles stayed like mini greenhouses.
I am late on my veggies seeds. let's hope I still get some veggies. Spring seems earlier this year. It has been in the 80's yesterday and today, but it will start to rain later.
