this is his underneath. He would jump and flip all around if disturbed. He could really jump!

This one is out of focus, but it shows how his segments are separated by deep grooves in black. He almost looks like a molded twig.

This appears to be Catocala ilia (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/2baero8
Because of recent changes in systematics, the family Noctuidae now appears to have been sunk to the rank of subfamily (Noctuinae) in the family Erebidae, with underwings in the subfamily Erebinae. I do not understand the reason(s) for this change.
