Let me jump in for a minute. My DM lost most of her sight in on eye, it was not until a number of years ago that we learned it she caught a disease when she was visiting her aunt from the dairy goats that her Aunt kept. She only has vision in the outer edge of her eye, the center of her vision is gone.
If I didn't hear this myself from an eye doctor, I wouldn't
OK.. now all scary stuff.. meanwhile - why did all of our forefathers not die...
I firmly believe that exposure in minut amounts on a regular basis actually helps to adjust the body to "this is normal"
I believe a lot of our problems are more from our bodies reacting to something strange than a disease attacking us. So what is strange?
I was diagnosed years ago with "farmers eye" .. lol, I seem to get these little blisters, they do not hurt, I just can't wear contacts, and if the got to full of fluid they would have to be "popped".. cause.. time spent in the fields.. my cause.. my time spent on the beach in florida..
Would I change my lifestyle.. after all I have read? Maybe to a point, but I can tell you, I will continue to have chicks, lambs, kids birds.. and whoever needs to in the house.. I don't believe I will be putting the chicks in my bedroom, never did cuz they are just too noisey.. but now I will not. I will still clean out the stalls and stir up whatever is in there.. I will still clean out the chicken coop and get the itchies around my nose from the DE I use.. I will continue to wash my hands when I come inside..
And the most important thing..
I just plain ol don't bite my fingernails anymore!!
Learn, be cautous, live wisely, but do not live your life in a bubble.. there is just too much to see and do!
Well said!
I agree!
I didn't mean for anyone to get rid of thier chickens, because I am keeping all my birds.
Exactly. Live it up, in an intelligent way. I wear a mask when cleaning the coop. I also have 4 cats and 2 dogs in the house and sweep the entire house every single day. My pets have never had an accident in the house, ever. Having animals & pets is calming and good for your blood pressure. You get more exercise, socialize more with other people because of them and it's also good for your serotonin levels.
You can do ALL the right things and still get creamed by a bus. Have fun, be kind, life is too short.
We didn't take it that way Jordan, but this has been a great thread, and it's good to kick things around. I think we all agree that we should be cautious in how we do things, but enjoy life, and that means enjoying the wonderful world of animals, poultry, and the great people that frequent this forum. Jordan I think what you told us certainly served to open our eyes and I personally thank you for it. Bless you. Hay.
Haystackthank you. Yes, I just wanted everyone to be aware of what can happen.
Jordan, I very much agree with Mr Hay.. I am loving this conversation.. It is very informative.. I find it hard to get so many people with my interests in one place.. and to have a conversation, whether we all agree or not.. throwing ideas and tips around.. well lets just say.. this is my very favorite forum.. I have learned so much from everyone.
yes well said. I think I should probably wear a mask too when cleaning and no more in the house. I am on Methotrexate for my RA and it lowers your immunity. I have a cough for a while but assumed it was my allergies and cigarettes. Will get it checked next month for my physical
Do you think this is a sign that we should start eating Vegemite?
Well, it is hard to eat a Vegemite sandwich while wearing a mask....but I'm game.
Unprompted, DH just requested a Vegemite sandwich as an evening snack....No, really...
Oh no, it's starting all over again! The insidious addictive spread!
Definition of "spread":
.
•distribute or disperse widely; "The invaders spread their language all over the country"... Check.
•circulate: cause to become widely known; "spread information"...Check.
•strew or distribute over an area; "He spread fertilizer over the lawn"...Check.
•a tasty mixture to be spread on bread or crackers or used in preparing other dishes...Check
I think Vegemite has it covered.....
LOL, yes, that just about covers it.
The threat of a pitch fork is called "unprompted".....?
I might (seriously) try it again (visions of wooden spoons dancing in my head) after I'm done with my "No bread" fast.
This has been a very informative and interesting thread. My 94 year old mom has had glaucoma for over 40+ years. She's had multiple surgeries for it. About two years ago she had a stroke just in her left eye. I didn't even know you could get a stroke in your eye. It blinded that eye immediately. Now the glaucoma pressure is too low (6) and she gets no pressure lowering drugs in that eye. She has to put a steroid drop in that eye twice a day. She might lose the eye if it totally shuts down.
My grandmother didn't have glaucoma, just migraines in her temple area.. then suddenly one day she called us screaming she was blind & to get to her house. She had suffered a stroke in her left eye. Was quite a shock for us as well, not knowing you can have a stroke in your eye. Its very interesting as well for me to read this.
Many people have mini strokes and never know it. My mother has has some and my brother has had a lot of them. When my DM had the first one that we know about I was with her and I realized when she started talking about"21 in the drink" and other strange things that there was some thing wrong. I drug her to the firestation near by and her blood presser was over 300.
Well Put Fran, and I like you will continue to relish in my animals... But I will not put the babies in billys room for him to watch chick tv anymore, they will be in the living room, moved to the tack room at one week of age and then out to the front yard at 5 weeks and lalalalal.
I will allow Billy to still rake his horses dung, I aint doin it it aint my horse... LOL
I do not think that we will be spreading Vegimite anytime soon on bread, no Nutella that is so a different story, I am afterall a tad bit nuts!!
Jordankittyjo, How is that disease transmitted, the one that caused the blindness in your eye?
Interesting, and scary, thread!
Gwen, I really don't know. maybe from dander or dust?
Did she say whether it was because you breathed it in or because it got in your eye?
She didn't say. Now you have me wondering.
If you find out, I'd be very interested in knowing! Sort of makes a difference - should you wear a mask when cleaning the coop or goggles? I always wear a mask; never thought of wearing goggles!
Histoplasmosis is inhaled.
If you mean histoplasmosis it is transmitted through the birds' droppings. I assume inhaling their dried dust would be enough. Eating food contaminated with the droppings would do it too.
