One nursery told me 8. I went to a tomato class given by Steve Goto, so called Tomato King who has a nursery in Curpertino, I think, and he told me not to plant more than three in that bed. I live in Redding CA, very intense heat in the summer. He also told me to deep water once a week. We have temps in the 90's to 110, in the middle of summer. He said to only water if the tomato plant is wilted in the cool morning, and not to worry about wilting in the afternoon. Anyone? I'm not sure he was familiar with our heat. He also said to deep water once a week on a slow drip for 45 minutes.
How many tomatoes can I plant in a 10 ft x 4 ft raised bed?
I believe they say to plant tomatoes 2-3ft apart, So going with that, it seems more than 3 could be planted. Remember they do need to get enough sun, and need tall support. We have similar heat here and even full sun plants appreciate some late afternoon light shade. Have you posted on the tomato forum? There are probably folks there with experience too. I am trying strawbale gardening this summer based on info from the strawbale forum and they recommend 2 tomato plants per bale, so alot more than 3 would go into a 10x4 bed.
