Good find Catsy!! I had no idea about the medicated starter....in fact, that's what mine had!! I've only had 2 goslings - one rescue Canada goose who was mauled by a friend's neighbor's dog, and one Sebastopol gosling whom I incubated and hatched, and who recently had to be rehomed because he was taking a very unnatural interest in our hens and terrorizing them and ripping out their feathers in his...um...exuberance. Clearly chickooses (?) or goschicks (?) are not feasible...at least I don't believe so. After one of his attempts, the hen couldn't walk any more and died a few days later. Dreadful. ANyway, he's gone to a farm with other geese including single females. Yay.
Goose Baby Drama
Droit de seigneur?
I always think of geese as the nobility of poultry, with swans, royalty, ducks the bourgeois, and chickens, well, artisan?
Indeed - he was a noble sort. He used to get very agitated when the ducks were mating - he would stand right beside them and honk incessantly until it was over. I always thought he was the moral compass of the barnyard. Now I wonder if he was jealous? But I never saw him go after a duck, just the chickens. He was also very protective of chicks and would hiss if anyone went near them.
Thanks Catscan for the links and This caught my eye...
Ducklings and goslings need sufficient niacin in order to develop strong, healthy legs. Signs of niacin deficiency are weak legs and difficulty standing or walking. The condition is often reversible if caught early enough and involves switching to a niacin rich waterfowl feed along with niacin supplementation (brewer's yeast flakes are tasty and rich in niacin). If the dietary deficiency is not corrected, permanent leg damage may result.
So I checked the electrolytes and this is what has in the way of Niacin MG Per Pound 12500 not given it a pound, but amyve in total 1 tablespoon. Along with Niacin it has Potassium, Vit A, D, E, Riboflavin and Calcium and Pantothenic acid. thiamine... My chick starter is not medicated, and I am very careful not to drown it in the electrolytes, using a syringe and usually a drop at a time until it shakes more than it drinks. I always set it down with the beak in the water, and fresh water is in the tank. Pendleton does try and stand, is holding its head up better than yesterday and getting big. I was concerned that there was no poo in the clean tank, so I checked its behind and it had a clump there. So I gently cleaned it and put it back in the tank.. A few hours later (we were planting a garden) I came in and there was two spots of poo and it looked like normal poo.
UNRELATED TO GOOSE... Today I was out getting the BBQ ready and Billy came up on the porch crying. I asked him what was wrong and he said the baby ducks were out there. I said ok but why are you crying. He said he was trying to rescue them and one dropped out of his hand.. I asked him to show me where they were cause our bird area is a ways from the house and knew he had not been down there. we walked off the porch and there was about 10 little ducklings out by the truck.. So we herded them back to the duck area, I had to laugh... He said it was his fault, and I said no buddy you saved them... He had gone and checked on the turkeys and the gate was open. I told him that gate meant nothing, they crawled out the fence, not the gate... I had to laugh, and re assure him that he did save them by telling me they were under the truck. He was actually heart broken and real tears... All was well, they were reunited with momma and I need to figure how to block up the fence...

HONK! HONK! HONK! (words of encouragement for Pendleton in geese)
What a sweet baby!!!
Aw, how cute is that? And how sweet was Billy? I loved that story - though it was too bad that he felt responsible for everything. That's a sensitive one, right there. It will make him strong, but I fear he's going to have some struggles learning to balance his compassion and build some boundaries.
I'm very much caught up in this drama and pulling for the little guy/gal. Good job. Make sure to keep taking pictures because he'll be huge before you know it. Can you weight him? That might help you to see his progress.
I think the idea of putting a duckling in there with him is great.
Catsy, what was it with Vitamin E with Silkies with leg problems?
I wonder if you might splint his legs with the velcro or bandaid thing?
That is the drawback to late hatching eggs.. often happens. I'm pretty sure Catsy has had major success with leg problems and vitamins..
Tonight when I get home it is going for a swim... Will try it on the sink..
If you can tell me how, I can try.. I was reading that letting them swim will help with leg issues and make them stronger.
I'm sure that will be good therapy! I swam thoroughbreds for therapy for years. :)
I found pictures

What about this??
give your little chickie three drops of POLYVISOL three drops in beak once a day for a week to deal with any deficiency issues. Its a baby vitamin... Looking for specifics now.
Make sure you get the one with NO iron.
Will do when I am buying the band aids.. I think I will get spiderman.. LOL
Your little goose will possibly sink. Without the oil from mom's feathers baby geese and ducks aren't waterproof.
He looks so much better! I fed a sickly chick a mix of egg yolk and yogurt, later making it yogurt and chick crumbles. At first I wiped it on the corner of her beak but she learned to peck it out of a bottle cap as I held her. Is his neck strong enough for that?
Honk if you're cheering for Pendleton! HONK!!!
HONK! HONK!
I will hold him up and let him float hopefully he will start moving his legs... I tried egg yolk and electrolytes last night, and today I will start him on the Polyvisol so I will stop the electrolytes for a few days, dont want it to Od on vitamins... I left some crumbled egg yolk in there when I went to work, and some chick starter so I will see when I get home. The neck is getting stronger every day, I usually hold it while I am feeding...
HONK HONK HONK... Thanks for Honking.
Got Spongebob Band aides and Fuzzy day glow pipe cleaners at lunch.. LOL
Make sure the band aid does NOT stick to the baby's legs! It'll be hard to get it off, and might hurt the little thing!
A baby duck companion might do a world of good. Just watch to be sure the duck, which gets around fine, does not bowl the goose over and hurt it.
HONK! HONK! HONK! ^_^
honk...Honk....HONK!
Honk... Honk.. Peep
Oooops excuse me!
Whaz up about that dearZZs? Peeping? I quite often peep. It's very difficult being avilingual I find. Do you speak swan? That's a toughie. HONK! Hi Pendleton ^_^
HONK!!! HONK!!!
(had a weak moment, bought 12 more chicks from TSC tonight, including 4 gold laced Wyandottes....because....they were there....and so cute)
I want some blue orpingtons.
I want a flock! I cringe cuz I know that my flock is not good for you dears but I am very excited cuz Peppy Le Peu and Peppermint have moved back in under my garden shed. Sorry (blush). I hope you still luv me Cousin Grow?
Dahlianut...have you completed your monograph on the regional dialects of the Cygnus? I pre-ordered it on Amazon.
CMoxon...such singular lack of character....a great disappointment to those of us who looked to you as a model of restraint in the acquisition of gallus gallus.
HA!
CajuninKy...I hatched a blue bird from an egg that was suppose to be an Orpington...but it had a rose comb. I still don't know what it was.

I have known about buff orpingtons for a long time but just recently found out there was a blue orpington. They are very pretty. Do any of you have them?
I have a bantam roo with a rose comb.
Someone offers eggs for Blue Orpington on eBay.
i think i saw them on mypetchicken.com when i was looking for blue cochins.
I'll look into them.
MissJestr, he is adorable.
Catscan I would like to see the blue bird...
Thanks Light...
I was checking the label on the Polyvisol and it has all the stuff I was giving Pendleton but it has Vit B which the cattle and swine stuff did not have.. I can really smell the B's..
Had its first bath tonight every time its beak hit the water, it would raise it up.. I am sure that was good for it, maybe strengthen its Neck muscles since that is what I am concerned about.
Things may not be good, I noticed one of Pendletons eye covers is not opening up any more. Also it seems that Pendleton falls on its back and can not right its self and there is a dent in Pendletons head above its eye like its skull did not completely form.. Still peeps and will drink water when I put its beak in the dish. We will see what happens when I feed Pendleton tomorrow.
Time for vitamins with some yolk..
