it all started with a simple reminder -
"ok hon, the babies should be here tuesday or wednesday, make sure you go to the feed store and get some chick starter before then."
i thought it was simple enough instructions. then i got the call at work - with an excited husband on the other end - "hey, they have sorted chicks this year, all different kinds and all of them are pellets!" which i gently corrected to pullets... no, i didn't think there was anywhere local to get sexed chickens... yes i know aracaunas lay pretty eggs, those are the kind i really want... hey don't buy any, we have 26 coming in the mail next week that's why you're there, remember? but i knew it was already too late, and so did my coworkers who were all laughing at the half of the conversation they could hear. and sure enough, i came home to 4, week-old aracauna chicks, an excited little boy, and an almost as excited husband.
they did remember to get the chick feed at least... i knew it would be dangerous to send them in there...
just a simple trip...
They look like Ameraucana or Easter Egger chicks...Araucana are tailless (at least in the states).
I know the feeling...there are some Ameraucana chicks at a new feed store I just discovered...it is all I can do not to buy some....
How cute. 4 more isn't that many......
We started out with 8 and then made it an even dozen and then added a few more and a few more and a few more and now we have more than 80 chickens.
they are ameraucana, that was my goof. too excited i guess. husband corrected me (he loves birds, i think he is more excited than i am).
let's see - one jealous but excited dog, one dog that wants to be a mother hen, four cats that could care less, one cat that wants to eat them, and one cat that is so jealous he has reclaimed husband's lap and won't let him get out of the chair... two parakeets that haven't made a sound since they heard babies come into the house (i think that means they're mad at us). one husband that wants to play with babies but can't get out of the chair thanks to the jealous cat, and one kid that refuses to go to bed because "i'm not done playing with the babies, and oh mom can i please please sleep with them?"
LOL
Now that is funny. I love it when the husband can't say no...Sounds like a fun home to be in...LOL. Hay
LOL yep that is a happy home...
Too too funny. We have a cat like that.
Well, the new 4 were needed to bring the count to a nice, round, 30. Next level is 40. When do you need feed again??
that's what he said - 26 wasn't a good number, it should be an even 30... since then i've had two people try to give me "extra chickens" and one person try to give me "extra ducks".
you know, i tried to tell people you don't need a rooster to multiply your flock but no one believed me. (obviously they weren't including the generosity of others in their calculation). we're going to have to enlarge the run area if this keeps up!
Too funny and soooo true! You DON'T need a roo to expand your flock! Great!
cerridwenn Lets see I can be there in 14 hours, and bring you mass quantities of Ducks and A few geese... oh and a cowboy and his horse and his dog and the list could go on.... LOL
NEW PICS - actually over a week old but we've been too busy to check in since then - here are some fun new ones. chicks finally came in the mail, have taken over, several died but all seemed to be the same type and seemed really delicate so i'm thinking they had a rough trip through the albuquerque mail stop (have heard bad things about some people and baby birds). so we have hardly any pale yellow fluffs left but the rest seem healthy and happy now. and mcmurray's reimbursed me generously. must have just been a weak hatch for that breed, whichever it is.
