Had another round of severe storms roll through here Friday, with 70 MPH winds. This time we lost several big trees, 10 panels off the greenhouse and both doors. Found the doors and collected what panels we could find in the dark with a flashlight. Even lost one of the little panels in the roof section. Haven't been out there yet this morning to see the extent of the damage. I'll be really surprised if I find all of them. It' a real mess.
Question for anyone with a Rion re: doors
Oh pastime, I know your anquish. I had the same thing happen several months ago when a Nor'easter went through and raised bloody hell with the greenhouse. Rion was great at replacing parts quickly and since it was still being heated I needed to keep the heat inside at the time. I actually had the parts almost overnight.
I am going to try and find some of the Bautel calk and get ready for the hurricain season.
We are now facing a five day run of 90 deg. temps and that should certainly produce some dandy storms. God Bless and hang in there. I know how frustrating that can be. Here is a big Hug. JB
Thanks JB, I needed that. Found 7 of the 10 blown out wall panels and the missing roof vent panel (which appears to have been glued in the frame.) So I just have to buy 3 large ones and one smaller one for the roof. I can't believe all this happened 5 days after hearing about the Bautel caulk. I just hadn't gone to town yet. I took everything out of there yesterday, except for the cement blocks that hold my benches. Today I start the soil clean up and then a good wash.
Sgt. Yates dumb question: Am I supposed to take off all the rubber strips around the windows or go over them with the caulk?
Sorry to hear of your problem, pastime.
past time,
you do not have too do so just put a bead of caulk big enough to cover the panel, the strip and the fram . as long as the area is clean the Bautel caulk will stick to vituraly anything and bond it together.
Sarge
Thank you Sarge.
Is that the correct spelling of Bautel Caulking? No one here at Home Depot or Lowes have ever heard of it. There is another one starting with a B that when you google it that is what comes up.
JBerger,
Here you go this is spelled Correctly
butyl caulk
The Sarge
That is it Sarge, you are a gem, thanks so much. What military did you retire from? JB
My hubby was a retired Marine prior to his death.

Just noticed this thread; what we used for our Rion (an 8x8') was a pipe in the ground on both sides, the top of which was just below the doors' edges, and inserted a stick in each one to keep the doors open. The pipe was as close to the wall of the greenhouse as possible. We never had any problems with that. In the summer the doors stayed open all the time. But we did have trouble with tightness and the polycarbonate panels buckling out, and this past winter we lost one of the roof vents to heavy winds. We could have replaced it but it seemed to be time for an upgrade, so we got a different greenhouse. A friend of our son's took the Rion - in one piece, no less, with the help of four other guys - and was thrilled to get it. Our new one has glass sides and a brown aluminum frame, with a polycarbonate roof, so it seems sturdier and more likely to last. I think it's tighter than the Rion, too. The downside is that it only has one roof vent and no back wall vent, which I miss. We got the same size greenhouse so everything that we had for the old one fits in the new one, which is nice. We had to use the pipe and stick trick with this one, too, although it only has one door to prop open.
G_G -- I've actually been thinking of doing something similar, although I haven't implemented it yet; mine is sitting on railroad ties so I was thinking about drilling a hole in the tie that I could put a stick or some kind of rod into. It's the best thing I've come up with, so I believe I'm going to go ahead and do it. It's time to give the GH a good cleaning, so I'll take care of everything at the same time!
What make is your new GH? I think it would be nice to have the glass sides, much clearer for seeing in and out. (on the other hand, I'm not much of a window washer so I probably wouldn't be able to see through them anyway!)
We stuck the hollow metal pipes in the ground where they would keep the doors as far open as possible. That seemed to be the quickest and easiest way to accomplish what we were after.
My new GH is a Legacy, which I got from Greenhouse Megastore because their shipping was free. Here's a photo of it in April, when we first got it finished and functional. I was worried about the glass sides because I didn't want it to look cluttered and messy, so I picked up some green tubs at Target and put a lot of my supplies into those for a neater look. So far the sides are still pretty clear, and I don't do windows either! I wanted green trim but it didn't come that way - just brown. But actually it looks okay that way.
I just noticed that you can see the pipe with the stick in it on the left side of the greenhouse. We switched the stick (a section of fig branch) for a wooden rod designed to hold a flag, because it has a finial on top and looks nicer with our new greenhouse!

That's a beauty! And it came with a guard dog, too?
;-)

I need help from you all that has a greenhouse for awhile. This is my first year having a greenhouse and doing preparation for winter storage. I have a hole on the door and I don't know to to fix it. We followed the instruction on how to install the door and can't figure it out to fix that hole for the life of me. Can someone help.
do you mean where the doors come together around the latch?
yes cathy, around the latch!
Thank you,
I think you need to put a call in to your greenhouse supplier; you shouldn't have such a large gap there. But you can always use weather stripping to close it if they don't have any other suggestions. I ended up replacing my Rion with a glass and polycarbonate version made with metal crosspieces rather than resin or plastic because the Rion was just too drafty.
When your latch is on do you still have the big hole? I do not have one because the latch takes up the space. If you tell your dealer about it I feel sure they will give you a number to call Rion directly. They are extremely helpful and prompt in sending replacement parts. At least I have found them to be. I have had mine for seven years. JB
Yes, in fact that is close door above picture. I will give Rion a call maybe they have a solution on the problem.
Thank you all for the help.

gsg.
I took a good look at mine this morning and there is a thick black like rubber strip that goes the length of the door and it closes entirely. Maybe you are missing the black strip. Do you have a list of parts that came with it. If it is the strip you are missing then it may be helpful if you can give them a number when you call. I hope this helps. Good luck. JB
JB, there is a thick black rubber in but we have to cut where the latch that's where the hole is. So we shoudn't cut the rubber strip?
thanks,
gsg
No, you should not have to cut that strip the way mine looks. JB
Thanks JB, I'll check if we more of those thick rubber strips left.
The left door does not get cut. The right door gets cut but there should be no space if you have it together correctly.
When the latch goes shut the hole is the size of a pea if at all. That is on the right door. The left door does not get cut. I hope you can understand my stupid instructions. LOL
I understand your instruction very well JB, not stupid at all. I do very much appreciate you helping me out fixing my problem with the greenhouse door.
Thanks so much.
gsg
I hope I could have given you some help. You are certainly welcome. Just yell if you have any problems. JB
Have a great day!!!!!
