hatching has started...

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

unplugged the bator a bit ago. There's been nothing for days & her eggs are smelly. Even the ones that hatched were smelly... i'm ready for them to be out of the house. I'll try to take pictures tomorrow if the weather is better. Need to get a new one of Smidge too.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

My bantam eggs go into the hatcher tomorrow. Should hatch on Wednesday. I forgot to turn them a few times. Hope they do well anyway. The bantams are cute. Could Smidge be a feather legged bantam. A friend of mine in La has some of those.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

i have a lot of feather legged bantams.. he's definite a bantam.. i just don't know which breed that has feathered legs of bantams he is... which is what i want to know bc i want more of him. :) he needs a few girlfriends.

This is Smidge. Taken at.. about 4 weeks old he was just about the same height as a baseball

Very cute, and such a sweet expression too!

I've been looking... suspect he is a type of d'uccle.... any ideas?

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

He's so cute! I love his 'pants'.

Gridley, IL

I was gonna say i thought he looked like a self blue d'uccle you might look that color up and see what ya think. That would be my guess also.

I have some tiny chickens too that i decided look most like the dutch.I had one hatch on my birthday in march that i took pictures of in a shot glass.I belive she is a hen and she is still so tiny! she is not as tall at a coke can yet and she is almost 2 months old now.I have 2 more of those that hatched a little later and they are almost the same size.I love my tiny lil dutch but am not sure they are full dutch as some have a very small amount of leg feathering not much tho.As adults they are smaller than my seramas and about the same size as my bantam old english games.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

he's a duccle.. i bought 3 more last weekend. I was "told" he was porcelain from the guy who couldn't remember selling him to me 3 weeks before that.. I need to look up the color & see if it fits.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

I looked & I'm pretty sure he's a self blue.. also the other two i bought are self blue's.. and one supposedly Mill Fleur.

Doesn't matter any longer what Smidge is.. he is no more. Fox attacked. took 6 of my babies, 2 adult laying hens & came after me. Fox is also no more. I'm starting teh incubator back on Wed. It took all my prized babies. Going to attempt to replace them.

So sorry for your loss. It's a hard thing.

Vancleave, MS(Zone 8b)

oh how sad. I am sorry. I didn't know a fox would try to attack a human

Richmond, TX

I assumed from the whole episode that the fox was likely rabid.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

No, she said it was a young fox and looked like it was trying to play. The only reason it ran at her was for the chickens hiding behind her :(

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Greykyttyn sends her regrets that she won't be here for awhile. Her membership ran out and isn't sure when she'll be able to renew.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

So sorry. I was in the same boat and some very kind soul renewed mine for me. I am looking forward to the time when I can pay that favor forward.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Me too Cajunun.. There is truly a special person among us..who has taught us alot and I hope someday I can pay it forward as well,. (OH I just love that movie)

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

yeah i can post now!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to whoever my little birdie was that blessed me. Hopefully i get the chance to pay it forward to someone here as well.

I was so lost last week without DG but there was no way to get on here. A friend ended up in trouble & needed money. I gave my last bit for the month to them. So i was just expecting to be gone for a while bc i needed to help then first. But it was hard bc my cat was poisoned & my chickens were attacked twice by a fox (different foxes)... It was miserable not being able to ask questions, its such a helpless feeling to have all the vets closed, nearest Emergency vet 80 miles away & your cat is very very sick. We ended up needing to put him down bc he was beyond saving with my abilities. Hardest thing I've done in years. Anti freeze is a very cruel poison.

*hugs* thank you whoever you are.

{{fox was just a pup out playing.. i found a pile of my chickens.. he didn't tear them up.. was just playing chase & hide... he came at me bc he was a teenage boy with a one tracked mind... see chickens, catch chickens.. don't pay attention to white legs in front of chickens.. till he skidded to a stop & was like.. whoa... what's that. Last one got 1 chicken... and a shoe to his head. dropped her & she's in the sun room recovering. .22 is loaded & ready. now to practice.}}

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Happy you are back!! {{GK))

So, so sorry about your cat. That's horrible :-(

Pesky foxes! Healing thoughts to the chicken in the sun room.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

So sorry about all your troubles and the loss of your animals. It's the hardest part of loving them.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

{{{{{greykyttyn}}}} about your chicks and puddytat. So glad to see you here ^_^

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

Thanks dahlianut.

Miss Honeybear (chicken in sunroom) appears to be healing well. she's pretty ticked off to be in a dog cage tho. AND i found out my darling green egg layer.. lays a pink egg NOT a green one. We had a discussion about me risking life & limb (not really) for her scrawny neck so she could give me more pretty green eggs... maybe she will choose to paint them green now.

Humansville, MO
