My thunbergia seedlings have been growing well, and are now getting tall and wanting to climb. They are reaching up to the lights. They can't go outside for 4 more weeks. I'm wondering if I can pinch them to get them bushier, and also keep them a little shorter for now.
They are not leggy from lack of light - have been under lights since they germinated, but they are running out of room!
Thunbergia seedlings getting too tall
The growers around here cut them off for travel and they grow just fine.
Otherwise the vines get tangled in each other.
They will bush out .
Thanks for your advice. I thought it would be OK to pinch them, just wanted to double check!

You can probably root the pieces that you cut off and get more plants.
Ooops. I pinched them yesterday, and put the "tops" in my compost bin! Too bad I didn't know to do this. I think there were 2 shorter plants that I did not pinch yet - maybe I can root those. Do I root them in water, or soiless mix?
Either will work.
Thanks for your advice CLScott. I'll try to root the others.

I bring in some small branches that I have cut from overgrown bushes, stick them in the pot with the vine and use it as a trellis wrapping the tendrils around all the branch's smaller branches.
Good idea!
If you tossed them into the compost pile, toss some of the compost on top of the cuttings and they will root there, then you can pot them up.
What a great idea! I'll have to go out and check on them and pull them out if I see them rooting! Thanks Kay.

Enough of the un-cut tip has to be exposed so it can breathe.
